James Stubbings
James Stubbings (27 April 1856 – 17 July 1912) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1880 and 1885. Life Stubbings was born in Whitwell, Derbyshire, the son of James Stubbings, a mason, and his wife Ann. Stubbings himself became a stonemason. He was a notable performer for Whitwell Cricket Club in the 1880s with Samuel Malthouse and 'G G' Walker and all three also played for Welbeck as well as the county. Stubbings played for Players of the North in 1877, in a scratch team for Yorkshire against the Australians in 1878 and for Derbyshire against Harrow Wanderers in the 1879 season. His debut first-class appearance for the Derbyshire side was in the 1880 season against the touring Australians, and in the same year he played county matches against Yorkshire and Lancashire taking 5–51 in the second innings. Whitwell, Derbyshire
Whitwell is a village in Derbyshire, England. The population of the civil parish (including Whitwell Common) taken at the 2011 Census was 3,900. Although Whitwell celebrated its 1,000th anniversary in the 'Whitwell 1000' celebrations of 1989, it is much older than this celebration suggests. The earliest written references to Whitwell are from the Anglo-Saxon charters. However, many of its historical sites predate this period. Within the parish are several Iron Age burial mounds, an Iron Age fort and settlement, the remains of a Roman villa, medieval field systems, and both a Norman and Saxon church. The World Heritage Site of Creswell Crags was until recently within the parish. Whitwell Old Hall is a medieval manor house. Whitwell is a thriving village with strong community spirit. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1880 was the tenth season of the English cricket club Derbyshire. Derbyshire played Lancashire and Yorkshire, whom they had played in the previous season. However, instead of Hampshire and Nottinghamshire, they played against Sussex for the first time and Kent, whom they had played in a previous season. 1880 season Derbyshire played eight county games in 1880, two each against Lancashire, Kent, Sussex and Yorkshire. They also played a first-class match against MCC and a match against the touring Australians. Derbyshire won one match against Kent and one against Sussex. Robert Smith was in his fifth year as captain. Sydney Evershed of the brewing family and Edmund Maynard an Old Harrovian, both future captains, made their debuts for the club in 1880. Yorkshire County Cricket Club is one of 18 first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Yorkshire. The Australian cricket team in England in 1880 played nine first-class matches including one Test, which was the first ever played in England. They were captained by W.L. Murdoch. The team had difficulty in arranging fixtures against the counties, and prior to the Test match in early September had played only four matches that are now rated as first-class (as well as many fixtures against weaker opposition), despite having already been in England for almost four months. The Test was a late addition to the programme, being arranged at the instigation of the Surrey secretary, C. W. Alcock, who asked Lord Harris to put together a side. A. N. Hornby, Tom Emmett and George Ulyett refused to play, having unpleasant memories of the Sydney Riot of 1879, but Australia were also seriously handicapped, being without their star bowler, Fred Spofforth.
