James Stuart MacDonald
James Stuart MacDonald (28 March 187812 November 1952) was an Australian artist, art critic and Director of the National Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1929 to 1937. Early life MacDonald was born on 28 March 1878 in Carlton, Melbourne, the son of solicitor Hector MacDonald and his American wife Anna Louisa, née Flett. He attended Kew High School and Hawthorn Grammar School, but proved unsuccessful in his studies. David Davies (artist)
David Davies (21 May 1864 – 26 March 1939) was an Australian artist who was associated with the Heidelberg School, the first significant Western art movement in Australia. Biography Born and raised in Ballarat, Victoria, Davies attended art classes at the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries. He subsequently attended the National Gallery of Victoria Art School in Melbourne, studying under Frederick McCubbin and George Folingsby from 1886 to 1890. During this time, he often visited Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder and other ''plein air'' painters at their Mount Eagle "artists' camp". The artists stayed in a farmhouse on the property owned by Charles Davies, the brother of David Davies' future wife. Gother Victor Fyers Mann
Gother Victor Fyers Mann (1863– 1948), also known as G. V. F. Mann, was an Australian architect, painter and Gallery Director. Life Mann was born in Sydney on 8 October 1863. He was the fourth child of the surveyor John Frederick Mann and his wife Camilla Victoria, daughter of Sir Thomas Mitchell (explorer), Thomas Mitchell. He was apprenticed to the architect Thomas Rowe and elected an associate of the Institute of Architects of New South Wales in 1886. From 1888–1891 he practised in Brisbane in partnership with E. J. F. Crawford. Mann was a keen painter and around 1885 attended classes under Julian Ashton. Hugh Ramsay
Hugh Ramsay (25 May 1877 – 5 March 1906) was an Australian artist. Early life and education Ramsay was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 25 May 1877, the son of John Ramsay. He moved with his family to Melbourne in 1878. He was educated at Essendon Grammar School, and joined classes at the National Gallery of Victoria at age 16 under Lindsay Bernard Hall and became one of the most brilliant students ever trained there. He won several first prizes, and at the competition for the travelling scholarship held in 1899 was narrowly beaten by Max Meldrum, another student of unusual ability. William Dobell
Sir William Dobell (24 September 189913 May 1970) was an Australian portrait and landscape artist of the 20th century. Dobell won the Archibald Prize, Australia's premier award for portrait artists on three occasions. The Dobell Prize is named in his honour. Career Dobell was born in Cooks Hill, a working-class neighbourhood of Newcastle, New South Wales in Australia to Robert Way Dobell and Margaret Emma (née Wrightson). His father was a builder and there were six children. Dobell's artistic talents were evident early. In 1916, he was apprenticed to Newcastle architect, Wallace L. Porter and in 1924 he moved to Sydney as a draftsman.
