James Smith (footballer, Born 1908)
James Smith (6 May 1908 – July 1956) was an English footballer who made 137 appearances in the Football League playing for Doncaster Rovers, Lincoln City and Bradford City. He played at left back. Life and career Smith was born in Thurnscoe, which was then in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He played football for local team Brodsworth before joining Doncaster Rovers of the Football League Third Division North. He made 20 league appearances before joining fellow Northern Section club Lincoln City ahead of the 1931–32 Football League season. Smith made his Lincoln debut in November 1931, and appeared regularly as they won the division title that season, to earn promotion to the Second Division. Thurnscoe is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. The village falls within the Dearne North ward of the Barnsley MBC. In sports leagues, promotion and relegation is a process where teams are transferred between multiple divisions based on their performance for the completed season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are often called open leagues. Midland Football League (1889)
The Midland Football League was a semi-professional football league in England. It acted as a feeder league to the Football League for many years before merging with the Yorkshire League in 1982 to form the Northern Counties East League. History Founded in 1889, only one year after the Football League, the Midland League was the second league for professional clubs to be formed. Eleven clubs participated in the first season, 1889–90, four of whom (including the first champions, Lincoln City) would go on to achieve Football League status. The eleven founder members came from six counties. Peterborough United Football Club is an English professional football club based in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England.
