James Silas
James Edward Silas (born February 11, 1949) is a retired American professional basketball player, who played the point guard position. Born in Tallulah, Louisiana, Silas played the majority of his career with the Dallas Chaparrals/San Antonio Spurs of the ABA/NBA. His nicknames include "the Snake", "Captain Late" and "the Late Mr. Silas", the latter two referring to the fact that Silas seemed to play his best late in games. Career College Silas played college basketball at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. In his senior year Silas led the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks to a 29-1 record, averaging 30.7 points per game. Silas was also named an NAIA All-American twice in his college career. Professional Silas was drafted in the fifth round of the 1972 NBA draft by the Houston Rockets. However, he was waived by the Rockets before the 1972–73 season even began. Tallulah, Louisiana
Tallulah is a city in and the parish seat of Madison Parish, Louisiana, Madison Parish in northeastern Louisiana, United States. The 2010 population was 7,335, a decrease of 1,854, or 20.2 percent, from the 9,189 recorded at the 2000 United States Census, 2000 census. As this was historically a center of agriculture since the antebellum years, producing cotton and pecans, Tallulah and the parish have long had majority-African American populations. The small city is now nearly 77 percent African American; the surrounding parish is 60 percent black. Mechanization and industrial agriculture have reduced the number of jobs, and many residents have moved since the mid-20th century to larger cities with more opportunities. Rich Yonakor
Richard Robert Yonakor (October 3, 1958 – March 3, 2022) was an American basketball player. He played one season for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Yonakor, a 6'9" forward/center from Euclid, Ohio, played collegiately at the University of North Carolina from 1976 to 1980 where he averaged 5.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game for his career. He played in the 1977 NCAA championship game in North Carolina's loss to Marquette, was a part of 5 assorted ACC Championships, and is remembered in the basketball world for the beginning of the chant, "Air Ball," a chant often used today by fans when an opposing player takes a shot that misses the rim altogether. Despite his modest college statistics, Yonakor was drafted in the third round of the 1980 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs. Babe McCarthy
James Harrison "Babe" McCarthy (October 1, 1923 – March 17, 1975), was an American professional and collegiate basketball coach. McCarthy was originally from Baldwyn, Mississippi. McCarthy may best be remembered for Mississippi State's appearance in the 1963 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament when his all-white team sneaked out of town in order to face Loyola University Chicago, which had four black starters. In March 1975, McCarthy died as a result of colon cancer. Early life McCarthy was from Baldwyn, Mississippi and played high school basketball at Tupelo Junior High School. After high school he attended Mississippi State University where he was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. He did not play college basketball. He served in the Air Force and then began coaching high school basketball at his alma mater in 1947.
