James Curdie Russell
James Curdie Russell (1830-1925) was a Scottish minister. He served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1902. Life He was born in 1830. He was minister of Campbeltown from 1854 and remained there for most of his life. He advocated the use of Gaelic in services. He received an honorary doctorate (DD) in 1881 from Glasgow University. In 1903 (along with the Very Rev John Pagan) he was one of the several former Moderators invited to the official coronation of King Edward VII. He retired to Edinburgh living at 9 Coates Gardens in the West End. He died in 1925 and is buried with his wife in Dean Cemetery in western Edinburgh. Bequests He endowed three scholarships (Curdie Russell Scholarship) in Divinity to Glasgow University, with a preference to those versed in Gaelic Gaelic is an adjective that means "pertaining to the Gaels". James Samuel Risien Russell (17 September 1863 – 20 March 1939) was a Guyanese-British physician, neurologist, professor of medicine, and professor of medical jurisprudence. Early life Russell was of mixed race, born in Demerara, British Guiana (now Guyana), to Hon. William Russell, a Scottish émigré water engineer and sugar plantation owner, and Hon. Mrs Russell, who was of African descent but about whom little is yet known. He was one of four sons with an older brother John and two younger brothers, William (Junior) and Alexander. His father was one of the richest men in the colony. Russell was sent to Scotland as a teenager to continue his education. James Charles Russell is a New Zealand conservation biologist and professor at the University of Auckland. Russell is most widely known for his research on Norway rats (''Rattus norvegicus'') in New Zealand. One of the rats he studied swam over 400 metres between two Hauraki Gulf islands, breaking the swimming distance record for rats. The intentions of the rat are believed to have been amorous. The rat, known as Razza, was featured in '' Nature (journal), Nature'', and later in a children's book by Witi Ihimaera. Russell gained a PhD on the genetics and invasion ecology of rats, from the University of Auckland. He writes a blog for National Geographic on island conservation. James M. Russell III is an atmospheric scientist who has served as the developer of instrumentation for several NASA probes. He is currently a professor of Planetary and Atmospheric Sciences and co-director of the Center for Atmospheric research at Hampton University.
