James River National Wildlife Refuge
The James River National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge located along the James River in eastern Prince George County, Virginia. Its management is overseen by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. One of four refuges that comprise the Eastern Virginia Rivers National Wildlife Refuge Complex, James River National Wildlife Refuge was founded in 1991 to protect nesting and roosting habitat of the bald eagle from development. The refuge's of forest and wetlands are bordered by Powell Creek to the west, and by Flowerdew Hundred Plantation to the east. The land that is now the refuge was the site of Powellbrooke Plantation, whose owner Captain Nathaniel Powell (one of the original 1607 colonists), his wife, and ten others were killed during the Indian Massacre of 1622, and later Merchant's Hope Merchant's Hope was the name of a plantation and church established in the Virginia Colony in the 17th century. Prince George County, Virginia
Prince George County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 43,010. Its county seat is Prince George. Prince George County is located within the Greater Richmond Region of the U.S. state of Virginia. History Prince George County was formed in 1703 in the Virginia Colony from the portion of Charles City County that was south of the James River. It was named in honor of Prince George of Denmark, husband of Anne, Queen of Great Britain. In 1619, "Charles Cittie" was one of four "boroughs" or "incorporations" created by the Virginia Company. Powell's Creek (Prince George County, Virginia)
Powell's Creek is a tributary of the James River on the south side of the James River in Prince George County, Virginia, United States. The creek borders James River National Wildlife Refuge near Garysville, Virginia. History In 1730, a tobacco inspection site was located here. According to the Tobacco Inspection Act, the inspection was "In Prince George; at Appamatox Point, upon Col. Bolling's land; on Col. Robert Mumford's land; and Powel's Creek; upon Mr. Bland's land, under one inspection." According to a State of Virginia historical marker, "The creek ... was named for Nathaniel Powell, acting governor in 1619. Weyanoke Indian town was here.
