James R. Winchester
James Winchester (born March 23, 1952) is an American lawyer and judge who is currently an associate justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court, District 5. He had a two-year term as chief justice of the Supreme Court beginning in 2007 and was re-elected to this position in November 2016. Early life Winchester was born in Clinton, Oklahoma, in 1952. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Oklahoma in 1974 and his Juris Doctor from the Oklahoma City University School of Law in 1977. Career Winchester practiced law in Weatherford, Oklahoma, and Hinton, Oklahoma, before being named associate district judge for Caddo County, Oklahoma, in January 1983. In December 1983, at age 30, Winchester became one of the youngest district judges in the state when he was appointed as district judge for the Sixth Judicial District of Oklahoma. The Ten Commandments Monument, authorized by the Oklahoma legislature and approved by the governor in 2009, was installed on the grounds of the Oklahoma State Capitol, in Oklahoma City, in 2012. The mere concept engendered years of political controversy, court suits based on religious freedom of religion issues, destruction in 2014 by a man who drove his car into it, replacement in the same location, and even attempts to remove Supreme Court justices who ruled in 2014 that the monument must be removed to another site. Susan Winchester was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives to represent District 47 in 1998 where she served until 2008.
