James R. Sweeney II
James Russell Sweeney II (born 1961) is a United States federal judge, United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Biography Sweeney received a Bachelor of Science, with merit, in 1983 from the United States Naval Academy. From 1983 to 1992 Sweeney was an active duty Naval Flight Officer in the United States Marine Corps. He received a Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, in 1996 from Notre Dame Law School. Sweeney then clerked for Judge John Daniel Tinder of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana and Judge James L. Ryan of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. In 1999, Sweeney joined the law firm Barnes & Thornburg, where he practiced corporate law until becoming a judge in 2018. The United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana (in case citations, S.D. Ind.) is a federal district court in Indiana. It was created in 1928 by an act of Congress that split Indiana into two separate districts, northern and southern. The Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (MOVSM) is a military award which was created under Executive Order 12830 by George H. W. Bush on January 9, 1993. The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOT-SM) is a military award of the United States Armed Forces which was created through Executive Order 13289 on 12 March 2003, by President George W. Bush. The medal recognizes those military service members who have supported operations to counter terrorism in the War on Terror from 11 September 2001, to a date yet to be determined. A Reserve Good Conduct Medal refers to any one of the five military conduct awards, four of which are currently issued and one of which was previously issued, by the United States Armed Forces to members of the Reserve and National Guard.
