James R. Lowery
James Robert Lowery (April 12, 1884 – December 8, 1956) was a Canadian oilman, politician and military officer from Alberta. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1913 to 1921 sitting with the Conservative caucus in opposition, and later became a partner in the Home Oil Company. Early life James Robert Lowery was born April 12, 1884, near Hastings, Ontario, the third of ten children to John Boyd Lowery and Rachel Whitton. James' father was a farmer and cheese-maker and served as a government cheese inspector in the Village of Frankford in Ontario. After attending high school, Lowery secured a teaching job in North Hastings, despite having to repeat one year of math while in school. Lowery moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1905 where he secured a job as circulation manager for the ''Edmonton Journal'', eventually quitting to join John Michaels (of Mike's News Stand) with a contract to distribute the ''Journal''. Hastings, Ontario
Hastings is a community within the municipality of Trent Hills, Northumberland County, in the province of Ontario, Canada. It is situated on the Trent-Severn Waterway and the Trans Canada Trail in what is considered to be Ontario's "cottage country". It can be reached from Highway 401 by exiting at exit 474 at Cobourg and going north on County Road 45. It can be reached from Highway 7 at the Norwood exit going south (also on County Road 45). Hastings had a population of 1,208 at the 2001 Census. It is known as "The Hub of the Trent" as Hastings is directly on the Trent River and serves as a major centre for tourists, boaters, and fishermen. 1913 Alberta General Election
The 1913 Alberta general election was held in March 1913. The writ was dropped on 25 March 1913 and election day was held 17 April 1913 to elect 56 members to the 3rd Alberta Legislature. Elections in two northern districts took place on 30 July 1913 to compensate for the remote location of the riding. The method to elect members was under the First Past the Post voting system with the exception of the Edmonton district which returned two members under a plurality block vote. The election was unusual with the writ period for the general election being a very short period of 23 days. Premier Arthur Sifton led the Alberta Liberal Party into his first election as leader, after taking over from Alexander Rutherford. Home Oil Company
Home Oil Company Limited was a Canadian independent petroleum company that existed from 1925 and 1995. Home was founded to produce oil in the Turner Valley field, and by the end of World War II was the country's largest independent producer. Between 1952 and 1972, Home was controlled by Robert A. Brown, Jr., who pursued an aggressive and high-risk strategy. From 1979 and 1991 Home Oil operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary, first of the Consumers' Gas Company, then of Hiram Walker, and lastly of the Interprovincial Pipe Line Company. On 1 May 1991, Home Oil regained its independent status, which it retained for the duration of its existence. In 1995, Anderson Exploration acquired Home for C$879 million. Turner Valley, Alberta
Turner Valley is a town in the Calgary Metropolitan Region of Alberta, Canada that is surrounded by Foothills County. It is on Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail), west of Black Diamond and approximately southwest of Calgary. It was named after Robert and John Turner who settled in the area in 1886. The town was once the centre of an oil and natural gas boom. For 30 years, the Turner Valley oilfields were a major supplier of oil and gas and the largest producer in the British Empire. Battle Of Vimy Ridge
The Battle of Vimy Ridge was part of the Battle of Arras, in the Pas-de-Calais department of France, during the First World War. The main combatants were the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in the First Army, against three divisions of the German 6th Army. The battle took place from 9 to 12 April 1917 at the beginning of the Battle of Arras, the first attack of the Nivelle Offensive, which was intended to attract German reserves from the French, before the French attempt at a decisive offensive on the Aisne and the Chemin des Dames ridge further south, several days later. The Canadian Corps were to capture the German-held high ground of Vimy Ridge, an escarpment on the northern flank of the Arras front. 151st (Central Alberta) Battalion, CEF
The 151st (Central Alberta) Battalion, CEF, was a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Based in Camp Sarcee near Calgary, Alberta, the unit began recruiting in late 1915 in Strathcona, Battle River, and Red Deer. After sailing to England in October 1916, the battalion was absorbed into the 9th, 11th, and 21st Reserve Battalions on October 13, 1916. The 151st (Central Alberta) Battalion, CEF, had one officer commanding: Lieutenant-Colonel J. W. Arnott. Perpetuation of the 151st Battalion was assigned to The Alberta Regiment in 1920. When that regiment split in two in 1924, the North Alberta Regiment carried on the perpetuation. The North Albertas disbanded in 1936.
