James Arthur Oliver (January 1, 1914 – December 2, 1981) was an American zoologist, herpetologist and educator who served as the Director of the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Zoological Park (now the Bronx Zoo) and the New York Aquarium. James Oliver (physician)
James Oliver is a physician from Hernando, Mississippi. He was the first African-American M.D. to graduate from the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). In order to pay for college, Oliver worked construction as well as earning a music scholarship to Mississippi Vocational College (MVC) in Itta Bena, Mississippi, now Mississippi Valley State University, where he graduated in 1963. He was the third black student, but the first to graduate from UMMC. Because MVC was not accredited, he could not gain admission to a medical school outside of Mississippi, and UMMC at the time did not accept Black students. Determined to become a doctor, Oliver took additional science courses at the University of Dayton. Next, he joined the army as a researcher at the U.S. Army Biological Warfare Laboratories in Fort Detrick, Maryland while simultaneously taking graduate night courses at the National Institute of Health. Richard James Oliver (born 16 July 1975), known as Richard J Oliver or Jamie Oliver, is a Welsh musician and artist. He is known as the former keyboardist of No Devotion and former keyboardist, turntablist and supporting vocalist for the Welsh rock band Lostprophets. Early life Oliver and the band remotely knew each other, as they were part of the same music scene. Oliver used to play bass guitar in small local bands in his late teens, and was offered a place of the lead vocalist in Lee Gaze's first band, Fleshbind; he declined the offer as he had to go to university. James Trevor Oliver MBE OSI (born 27 May 1975) is an English chef, restaurateur and cookbook author. He is known for his casual approach to cuisine, which has led him to front numerous television shows and open many restaurants. Oliver reached the public eye when his series ''The Naked Chef'' premiered in 1999. In 2005, he opened a campaign, Feed Me Better, to introduce schoolchildren to healthier foods, which was later backed by the government. James Edward Oliver (1829-1895) was an American mathematician known for his role in establishing the mathematics department at Cornell University. Born in Portland, Maine, Oliver graduated from Harvard College in 1849 and was immediately appointed assistant in the office of the American Nautical Almanac in Cambridge. Two decades would elapse before, in 1871, he became assistant professor of mathematics at Cornell, and two years later was appointed as full professor.Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, 1887-1889 Oliver chaired the Department of Mathematics at Cornell from 1871 until his death. James Henry Oliver (26 April 1905 – 3 April 1981) was an American ancient historian and epigrapher, especially notable for his work on Ancient Athens. Life Oliver was born on 26 April 1905 in New York City to James Henry Oliver and Louise McGratty. He completed his undergraduate studies at Yale in 1926 and his doctoral studies at the same university in 1931. His doctoral supervisors were George Lincoln Henderson and Michael Rostovtzeff. He was a visiting student at the University of Bonn for one year (1927/28) and the American Academy in Rome as Jesse R. Carter fellow 1928–30. After his doctorate, he taught at Yale and then served as field epigrapher for the excavations of the Athenian Agora being carried out by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens from 1932 to 1936. James Harrison Oliver (1857 – April 6, 1928) was a Rear Admiral and member of the Naval Board of Strategy during World War I. He was also the first military Governor of the United States Virgin Islands from 1917 to 1919. He was often referred to as J. H. Oliver. Biography Oliver was born in Houston County, Georgia. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1872 and the United States Naval Academy in 1877. In 1893, he moved to Shirley Plantation in Charles City, Virginia and married; this would remain his home, while not serving in the Navy, for the remainder of his life. Resignation from the Navy In 1904, while a Lieutenant Commander commanding the , his ship was involved in a collision with a schooner in Delaware Bay which resulted in the deaths of 29 crewmembers of the schooner. James Oliver (August 28, 1823 – March 2, 1908) was an American inventor and industrialist best known for his creation of the South Bend Iron Works, which was reincorporated as the Oliver Farm Equipment Company after his death. After buying a South Bend, Indiana foundry with partner Harvey Little in 1855 he began experimenting with improved farm plow designs. Driven by the sales of his popular Oliver Chilled Plow, for which he registered 45 patents during his lifetime, the company grew to become one of the largest in Indiana and one of the world's largest producers of farm plows and horse drawn equipment during the late 19th century.
