James Milne (mathematician)
James S. Milne (born 10 October 1942 in Invercargill, New Zealand) is a New Zealand mathematician working in arithmetic geometry. Life Milne attended the High School in Invercargill in New Zealand until 1959, and then studied at the University of Otago in Dunedin (B.A. 1964) and Harvard University (Masters 1966, Ph.D. 1967 under John Tate). From then to 1969 he was a lecturer at University College London. After that he was at the University of Michigan, as Assistant Professor (1969–1972), Associate Professor (1972–1977), Professor (1977–2000), and Professor Emeritus (since 2000). He has also been a visiting professor at King's College London, at the Institut des hautes études scientifiques in Paris (1975, 1978), at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, California (1986–87), and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey (1976–77, 1982, 1988). Invercargill ( , mi, Waihōpai is the southernmost and westernmost city in New Zealand, and one of the southernmost cities in the world. It is the commercial centre of the Southland region. The city lies in the heart of the wide expanse of the Southland Plains to the east of the Ōreti or New River some north of Bluff, which is the southernmost town in the South Island. Abelian Varieties
In mathematics, particularly in algebraic geometry, complex analysis and algebraic number theory, an abelian variety is a projective algebraic variety that is also an algebraic group, i.e., has a group law that can be defined by regular functions. Abelian varieties are at the same time among the most studied objects in algebraic geometry and indispensable tools for much research on other topics in algebraic geometry and number theory. An abelian variety can be defined by equations having coefficients in any field; the variety is then said to be defined ''over'' that field. Historically the first abelian varieties to be studied were those defined over the field of complex numbers. Arthur Edward Ogus is an American mathematician. His research is in algebraic geometry; he has served as chair of the mathematics department at the University of California, Berkeley. Ogus did his undergraduate studies at Reed College, graduating in 1968, and earned his doctorate in 1972 from Harvard University under the supervision of Robin Hartshorne. Pierre Deligne
Pierre René, Viscount Deligne (; born 3 October 1944) is a Belgian mathematician. He is best known for work on the Weil conjectures, leading to a complete proof in 1973. He is the winner of the 2013 Abel Prize, 2008 Wolf Prize, 1988 Crafoord Prize, and 1978 Fields Medal. Early life and education Deligne was born in Etterbeek, attended school at Athénée Adolphe Max and studied at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), writing a dissertation titled ''Théorème de Lefschetz et critères de dégénérescence de suites spectrales'' (Theorem of Lefschetz and criteria of degeneration of spectral sequences). In algebraic geometry, motives (or sometimes motifs, following French usage) is a theory proposed by Alexander Grothendieck in the 1960s to unify the vast array of similarly behaved cohomology theories such as singular cohomology, de Rham cohomology, etale cohomology, and crystalline cohomology. Philosophically, a "motif" is the "cohomology essence" of a variety. Hermitian Symmetric Space
In mathematics, a Hermitian symmetric space is a Hermitian manifold which at every point has an inversion symmetry preserving the Hermitian structure. First studied by Élie Cartan, they form a natural generalization of the notion of Riemannian symmetric space from real manifolds to complex manifolds. Every Hermitian symmetric space is a homogeneous space for its isometry group and has a unique decomposition as a product of irreducible spaces and a Euclidean space. Shimura Variety
In number theory, a Shimura variety is a higher-dimensional analogue of a modular curve that arises as a quotient variety of a Hermitian symmetric space by a congruence subgroup of a reductive algebraic group defined over Q. Shimura varieties are not algebraic varieties but are families of algebraic varieties. Shimura curves are the one-dimensional Shimura varieties. Hilbert modular surfaces and Siegel modular varieties are among the best known classes of Shimura varieties.
