James Millar (artist)
James Millar (c. 1735 – 5 December 1805) was an English portrait painting, portrait painter. Born in Birmingham, Millar is recorded in the town's Poor Law levy books in 1763 but was to become the leading Birmingham portrait painter of the last quarter of the 18th century. Subjects of his portraits include John Baskerville, Francis Eginton, John Freeth and the wife of Lunar Society of Birmingham member Thomas Day (writer), Thomas Day. Millar's approach was strongly influenced by the Midlands Enlightenment – one of his works depicts allegories of wisdom, and symbols of science and the arts in the shadow of the tower of Birmingham's St. Philip's Cathedral, Birmingham, St. Philip's Church. James Millar (educationalist)
James Millar (J. P. M. Millar) (1893–1989) was a Scottish working-class educationalist of the twentieth century. Early life Millar, the son of an accountant, James Primrose Malcolm Millar, was born in Edinburgh on 17 April 1893. He attended Musselburgh Grammar School leaving at sixteen to take up an apprenticeship with an insurance company. His father was chief accountant to the Edinburgh City Chamberlain. His conservative political outlook was originally inherited by James. In 1923 he succeeded George Sims as General Secretary of the National Council of Labour Colleges. In this capacity he organised the loose network of labour colleges throughout Great Britain into eleven regional divisions, which each had a divisional organiser. James Millar (physician)
Dr James Millar (or Miller) (1762–1827) was a Scottish physician, botanist and author. He edited the fourth and fifth editions of the ''Encyclopædia Britannica''. Although a good writer on scientific topics, he was deemed a poor chief editor of the ''Britannica'', being "slow and dilatory and not well qualified". Life He was born in Ayr on the western Scottish coast on 4 February 1762. He studied classics and science at Glasgow University. For some years he acted as tutor in Jamaica, and then was chaplain at Glasgow university. Moving to Edinburgh, he graduated M.D. and became fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. In 1820 he was elected a member of the Harveian Society of Edinburgh and in 1822 he was elected a member of the Aesculapian Club. Sir James Duncan Millar (5 August 1871 – 10 December 1932) was a Scottish barrister and Liberal, later National Liberal politician. Family and education James Duncan Millar was the son of John Millar, a medical doctor from Edinburgh. He had family connections to Duncan McLaren, a former Edinburgh Member of Parliament (MP) and to the famous Liberal John Bright. James Millar (loyalist)
James Millar (born 6 July 1966) – commonly known as "Sham" – is a Northern Irish loyalist paramilitary. Millar was a leading member of the West Belfast Brigade of the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) until 2003 when he was one of a number of dissident members forcibly expelled from the group. Early years Sham Millar was born in Belfast to a Protestant family and made his home in the Shankill Road area of west Belfast. He is the son of Wendy Millar, who was a leading figure in the UDA's women's unit. Along with contemporaries such as his brother Herbie, Johnny Adair, Sam McCrory, "Fat" Jackie Thompson and Donald Hodgen, Millar was part of a skinhead gang that was involved in petty and violent crime in and around the lower Shankill in the early 1980s. James Broom Millar (1909-1986) was a British Foreign Service personnel, a World War II veteran, and Media executive. He was the Director General of the Gold Coast Broadcasting Service from 1954 to 1957 and the  Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation from 1957 to 1960. He was consequently the first Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. Early life and education Millar was born in 1909 at Baldernock, Stirling.
