James Merendino
James Anthony Merendino (born January 11, 1969) is an American film director and screenwriter who is best known for directing the 1998 film ''SLC Punk!''. Life Merendino was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah when he was six years old. He graduated from Judge Memorial Catholic High School in 1985 and went to college in Rome and Los Angeles, California where he studied Western philosophy and theology. Merendino moved to Hollywood, California when he was 19 and found work with Hollywood mogul Dan Melnick. In 1991, Merendino was hired to direct '' Witchcraft IV: The Virgin Heart''. His fourth film, ''Toughguy'' (1995), is a psychological thriller starring Heather Graham and introducing Carrie-Anne Moss and Balthazar Getty. His next film was ''A River Made to Drown In'' (1997). ''Punk's Dead'' (also known as ''Punk's Dead: SLC Punk 2'') is a 2016 American comedy-drama film written and directed by James Merendino. It is a sequel to the 1998 film ''SLC Punk!'' and was released on February 11, 2016. Set 19 years after the events of the first film, the plot deals with unresolved conflict and family strain, and also has elements of a coming-of-age story. Dogma 95
Dogme 95 is a 1995 avant-garde filmmaking movement founded by the Danish directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, who created the "Dogme 95 Manifesto" and the "Vows of Chastity" ( da, kyskhedsløfter). These were rules to create films based on the traditional values of story, acting, and theme, and excluding the use of elaborate special effects or technology. It was supposedly created as an attempt to "take back power for the directors as artists", as opposed to the studio. The Independent Spirit Awards (abbreviated Spirit Awards and originally known as the FINDIE or Friends of Independents Awards), founded in 1984, are awards dedicated to independent filmmakers. Winners were typically presented with acrylic glass pyramids containing suspended shoestrings representing the bare budgets of independent films. Since 2006, winners have received a metal trophy depicting a bird with its wings spread sitting atop of a pole with the shoestrings from the previous design wrapped around the pole.
