James McQuillan
James McQuillan (born 28 August 1993) is an Australian wheelchair rugby player and won a bronze medal with the Steelers at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Biography He grew up on a farm outside the town of Nanneella. In 2014, aged 20, McQuillan fractured his C5 vertebrae playing Australian rules Football in Albury, New South Wales and left him a C5 complete quadriplegic. In 2018, he completed an accounting degree at Charles Sturt University. In 2023, he was employed in ANZ Bank's Commercial Division. In 2022, he married his childhood sweetheart Kathryn. Wheelchair rugby Prior to his football accident, he loved playing football in winter and cricket in summer. He began playing wheelchair rugby in 2021, debuting for the Steelers 11 months later in Denmark. Wheelchair Rugby Classification
Wheelchair rugby classification is the seven class system that assigns players a point value based on functional mobility to insure parity in athletic ability on the court at any given time. Classification is handled by the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation. Definition In wheelchair rugby, players are assessed into seven classes: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 points. The lower level points indicate less functional ability and the higher points indicate greater functional ability. Men and women both play the sport, and they play on the same team. There are no separate events for men and women. Only four players are on the court at any given time. The total points on the floor for a team cannot exceed 8, but this maximum is increased by 0.5 points for every female on the court. 2022 Wheelchair Rugby World Championship
The 2022 Wheelchair Rugby World Championship was the 8th international championship for wheelchair rugby. It was held at the DGI-Huset recreational centre in Vejle, Denmark from 10–16 October 2022 and contested by the world's top twelve national teams. The tournament was won by Australia, defeating United States in the final by 58–55 to claim their second title. Tournament Twelve teams contested the 2022 Wheelchair Rugby World Championship. The preliminary rounds consisted of a group stage where the teams were split into two leagues which were contested as a round-robin. This was then followed by a round of crossover matches that determined the semi-finalists. Wheelchair rugby is a sport with national representation at the Paralympic games. The Australian Team is known as the 'Steelers'. Australia has competed at every Paralympics Games since the sport gained full Paralympic Medal status at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. The Steelers also competed in the 1996 Summer Paralympics where wheelchair rugby was a demonstration sport. The 'Steelers' defeated Canada at the 2012 London Games to win its first gold medal. In 2014, it won its first World Championship by defeating Canada. Wheelchair rugby (originally murderball, and known as quad rugby in the United States) is a team sport for athletes with a disability. It is practised in over twenty-five countries around the world and is a summer Paralympic sport. The US name is based on the requirement that all wheelchair rugby players need to have disabilities that include at least some loss of function in at least three limbs. Although most have spinal cord injuries, players may also qualify through multiple amputations, neurological disorders or other medical conditions. Players are assigned a functional level in points, and each team is limited to fielding a team with a total of eight points. Wheelchair rugby is played indoors on a hardwood court, and physical contact between wheelchairs is an integral part of the game.
