James Manning (minister)
James Manning (October 22, 1738 – July 29, 1791) was an American Baptist minister, educator and legislator from Providence, Rhode Island. He was the first president of Brown University and one of its most involved founders, and served as minister of the First Baptist Church in America. Early life and education Manning was born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. At the age of 18, he attended Hopewell Academy in Hopewell, New Jersey under the direction of Reverend Isaac Eaton in preparation for his religious studies. In 1762, he graduated from the College of New Jersey, which would later become Princeton University. At Princeton, Manning studied under president Samuel Finley who served under a board of trustees that declared, "Our idea is to send into the World good Scholars and useful members of Society." James Manning (1781–1866) was an English barrister, serjeant-at-law and law writer. Biography Manning, born in 1781 in Exeter, was son of James Manning, a Unitarian minister, by his wife Lydia, daughter of John Edge of Bristol. He early acquired a familiarity with history, antiquities, and the European languages. He was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn on 23 June 1817, and went the Western circuit, of which he was for many years the leader. His reputation rested mainly upon his learning. He was no orator, and his powers of advocacy were slight; but as a junior he obtained much business. By his knowledge of copyhold law he secured a perpetual retainer from the lord of the manor of Taunton Dean, Somerset, whose rights were the subject of continual litigation. He enjoyed the friendship of Lords Brougham and Denman, and rendered them assistance in the defence of Queen Caroline. James Henry Manning (January 31, 1862 – October 22, 1929) was an American professional baseball player, manager, executive and team owner. He played five seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily as an outfielder (261 games), but also as a second baseman (72 games), shortstop (35 games), and third baseman (four games). He played four years in the National League with the Boston Beaneaters (1884–85) and the Detroit Wolverines (1885–87). He also played professional baseball in Kansas City, Missouri, primarily as a second baseman, from 1887 to 1892 and 1894 to 1897, including one year in the American Association with the Kansas City Cowboys. Manning was one of the three principal organizers of the Western League in 1893 and was the owner and manager of the Kansas City Cowboys/Blues from 1894 to 1900. James Dermot Manning (born in Georgetown, British Guyana on 10 September 1917 and died in Wellington, New Zealand on 30 June 1989) was a surgeon, pathologist and public health administrator. He was a leading authority on the laboratory diagnosis of Toxoplasmosis. Education Manning was educated at Clongowes Wood College near Clane in County Kildare in Ireland and studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Medical College and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His qualifications were as follows – MRCS (Eng) LRCP (London) 1940, MB BS (London) 1946, MD (London) 1951, DipBact (London) 1951, MRCPath 1966 and FRCPath 1978. James Benjamin Manning (July 21, 1943 – January 1, 2020) was an American professional baseball player. Manning was a right-handed pitcher who had a brief, five-game stint at the age of 18 with the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball in . He stood tall, weighed and batted right-handed. Manning signed with the Twins in 1961 and spent his first professional season in the low minor leagues, in the Appalachian League. He was kept on the Twins' opening-season 28-man roster (then permitted in MLB) in 1962, and made his debut in a home game April 15 against the Los Angeles Angels. Coming into the game in relief with Minnesota trailing, 6–0, he held the Angels scoreless on three hits in three innings pitched. In his fourth Major League game on April 28, he started against the Cleveland Indians at Municipal Stadium. James David Manning (born February 20, 1947) is an American pastor at the ATLAH World Missionary Church. Manning grew up in Red Springs, North Carolina, and has been with ATLAH since 1981. James Manning (1814–1893) was an English born architect and builder, active in Perth Western Australia. He trained as a civil engineer, and worked in London, sailing to Perth in 1850 to assume the position of the Clerk of Works in the Comptroller-General's office in Western Australia. In this role he played an active part in the construction of a number of key colonial buildings.
