James Mahaffy
James Caven Mahaffy (August 29, 1905 – November 29, 1986) was a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1940 to 1944. Mahaffy held a seat in the electoral district of Calgary as an Independent. Mahaffy briefly served as Leader of the Opposition. Political career Mahaffy ran for a seat in the 1940 Alberta general election. He was elected to the third seat in the Calgary electoral district as an Independent under the Alberta Unity Movement. Port Elgin, Ontario
Port Elgin is a community in Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. Its location is in the traditional territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation. Originally named Normanton the town was renamed Port Elgin when it was incorporated in 1874, after James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, a former Governor General of the Province of Canada. Although road signs indicate the name Port Elgin, it is no longer an entity, per se. In 1998, the Town of Southampton, the Town of Port Elgin and Saugeen Township were amalgamated to form the Town of Port Elgin-Saugeen-Southampton. On December 17, 1998, the Province renamed the new municipality as the Town of Saugeen Shores. The 9th Alberta Legislative Assembly was in session from February 20, 1941, to July 7, 1944, with the membership of the assembly determined by the results of the 1940 Alberta general election held on March 21, 1940. The Legislature officially resumed on February 20, 1941, and continued until the fourth session was prorogued on March 24, 1944 and dissolved on July 7, 1944, prior to the 1944 Alberta general election. Alberta's 9th government was controlled by the majority Social Credit Party for the second time, led by Premier William Aberhart until his death on May 23, 1943; he was succeeded by Ernest Manning, who would go on to be the longest serving Premier in Alberta history. 1940 Alberta General Election
The 1940 Alberta general election was held on March 21, 1940, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Despite its failure to implement its key policy, providing prosperity certificates to all Albertans, the Social Credit Party of Premier William Aberhart won a second term in government. Nevertheless, it lost a considerable number of seats that it had gained in the 1935 landslide. This provincial election, like the previous three, saw district-level proportional representation (Single transferable voting) used to elect the MLAs of Edmonton and Calgary. City-wide districts were used to elect multiple MLAs in the cities. All the other MLAs were elected in single-member districts through Instant-runoff voting. The Independent Citizens Movement (or Independent Citizens' Movement) is a political party in the U.S. Virgin Islands that was founded by Virdin C. Brown and Steve O'Reilly in 1968. Its symbol is the torch. The party advocates for grassroots participation in politics, as well as more autonomy for the U.S. Virgin Islands. Aylmer John Eggert Liesemer (November 27, 1905 – January 4, 1995) was a Canadian politician and teacher. Early life Liesemer was born in Didsbury, Alberta in 1905. He received all of his early public grade school in Didsbury with the exception of 1 year in Calgary. In 1921 and 1922, Liesemer attended Normal School in Calgary at what became the Administration Building for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. He was one of the first class of graduates from that school. Liesemer became a teacher and taught in Didsbury and Calgary. He started teaching High School students in 1930 through to his retirement in 1970. He was an instructor in history, geography and social studies at Crescent Heights High School in Calgary. Howard Burton MacDonald was a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1944 to 1955. He held a seat in the electoral district of Calgary as an Independent and later a member of Social Credit. Political career MacDonald ran for a seat in the Alberta Legislature in the 1944 Alberta general election. He ran as an Independent candidate under the unity movement of opposition parties opposed to the Social Credit government. He placed fifth in the first count but when vote transfers under the Single Transferable Voting system in use he finished fourth, winning a seat in the 17th vote count. MacDonald ran for re-election in the 1948 Alberta general election.
