James M. Simmons
James M. Simmons (commonly referred to as ''Jimmy Simmons'' or ''Dr. Simmons'') is an educational administrator, musician and former university president at Lamar University. James Simmons served as the 10th president of Lamar. He resigned the presidency effective July 1, 2013 to return to the Lamar faculty as a music instructor. To honor his service to Lamar, The Texas State University System Board of Regents named him President Emeritus and approved the naming of the James M. "Jimmy" Simmons Music Building. The City of Beaumont formally recognized his service to Lamar and the community by changing the name of University Drive to Jimmy Simmons Boulevard. Simmons is widely regarded as one of the most successful presidents in Lamar University's history. He has won numerous awards for his successful administration. Lamar University is a state university in Beaumont, Texas. Lamar is a Carnegie Doctoral Research University, one of only 27 so designated universities in the United States. Founding and Establishment The idea for a public junior college in Beaumont's South Park was formed by Louis R. Pietzsch. Pietzsch had become intensely interested in the junior college movement while enrolled in summer school at the University of Chicago in 1918, and by 1921, was convinced that South Park should have a junior college. Lamar University started on September 17, 1923 as South Park Junior College, operating on the unused third floor of the new South Park High School, with Pietzsch acting as the first president of the college. Approximately 125 students enrolled in 1923 and were taught by 14 teachers. Eight students who had transfer credits graduated in 1924. Beaumont High School was a public, co-educational secondary school in the Beaumont Independent School District in Beaumont, Texas from 1898 to 1975. History In 1884, two buildings were used by the district for schools: the Old Fireman Hall and the Negro Odd Fellows Hall. Beginning in 1898 a superintendent was hired, new school buildings were constructed and funds were budgeted for their maintenance. Beaumont High School graduated a class of three on June 1, 1900, in a ceremony at the Kyle Opera House. Ida Lillian Pittman was valedictorian; Ludlow Calhoun, class salutatorian; and Harry Potter Jirou, class essayist. The title of Miss Pittman's valedictory address was "Some Women of History."
