James Lockhart (Scottish Aristocrat)
James Lockhart of Lee and Carnwath, Count Lockhart-Wishart (Wischeart) of the Holy Roman Empire (1727 – 6 February 1790) was a Scottish aristocrat with a successful military career. Early years James Lockhart was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, the second son of a prominent Jacobite family, the Lockharts of Carnwath. His grandfather, George Lockhart, was the Scottish agent of James Francis Edward Stuart, the 'Old Pretender', and the author of the posthumously published 'Lockhart Papers'. These documents, including letters and George Lockhart's journal, comprise probably the most important primary source of information on the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. Lockhart's elder brother, also named George, was the personal aide-de-camp to Charles Edward Stuart, the 'Young Pretender', during the Jacobite rising of 1745. James Lockhart (banker)
James Lockhart (1763–1852) was an English banker who wrote on numerical analysis. Life He was one of three children and two sons of James Lockhart (1735–1814), a Scottish banker, and his wife Mary Harriot Gray or Grey, from a Quaker family; John Ingram Lockhart was his brother, and the daughter was Mary Harriett, married name Greenwollers. He was educated at Reading School and Eton College. Lockhart worked as a banker in Pall Mall, London, in his father's firm Lockhart, Wallace, & Co. He became a partner, and set up the Cattle Insurance Company. Retiring from the bank in 1799, he moved north to the Windermere area after the death of his first wife. Lockhart knew Walking Stewart, and stated he had learned from him. He knew also William Combe, and the idea for Combe's "Dr Syntax" has been attributed to him. James Lockhart (Indiana Politician)
James Lockhart (February 13, 1806 – September 7, 1857) was an American lawyer and politician who served one term politician as a United States representative from Indiana from 1851 to 1853, then again in 1857. Biography He was born in Auburn, New York where he attended the public schools. Later, he moved to Ithaca, New York about 1826 and operated a woolen mill. He moved to Indiana in 1832 and studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1832 and commenced practice in Evansville, Indiana in 1834. Lockhart was the city clerk in 1836 and 1837 and the prosecuting attorney of Vanderburg County, Indiana 1841–1845. He served as judge of the fourth judicial district from 1846 until 1851, when he resigned. He was a delegate to the Indiana constitutional convention in 1850. Sir James Haldane Stewart Lockhart, (25 May 1858 – 26 February 1937) was a British colonial official in Hong Kong and China for more than 40 years. He also served as Commissioner of British Weihaiwei from 1902 to 1921. Additionally, he was a Sinologist who made pioneering translations. Early life Born as James Haldane Lockhart in Ardsheal, Argyllshire, Scotland, his parents were Anna Rebecca Charlotte (Stewart) and Miles Lockhart of Lismore, Argyll. His grandfather was banker James Lockhart. He attended King William's College (1868–72), George Watson's College, and the University of Edinburgh, and attempted to enter the civil service in India. Failing to do that, Lockhart took a Colonial Service cadetship in Hong Kong in 1878. Lockhart was born on 16 October 1930 in Edinburgh and studied at the Royal College of Music. In March 1954 he gave the first UK performance of Frank Martin's Sonata da Chiesa for Viola d'Amore and Organ at All Souls Church, Langham Place with the violist Harry Danks. James Lockhart (historian)
James Lockhart (born April 8, 1933 - January 17, 2014) was a U.S. historian of colonial Spanish America, especially the Nahua people and Nahuatl language. Born in Huntington, West Virginia, Lockhart attended West Virginia University (BA, 1956) and the University of Wisconsin–Madison (MA, 1962; PhD, 1967). Late in life, Lockhart wrote a short, candid memoir. He joined the US Army and was posted to Germany, working in "a low-level intelligence agency," translating letters from East Germany. Returning to the US, he entered the graduate program at University of Wisconsin, where he pursued his doctorate in the social history of conquest-era Peru. His dissertation, published in 1968 as ''Spanish Peru, 1531-1560'' was a path breaking approach to this early period. James Robert "Jamie" Bruce Lockhart (14 March 1941 – ) was a British diplomat, intelligence officer, author, and artist. The son of diplomat J. M. Bruce Lockhart and grandson of Scottish rugby international John Bruce Lockhart, he gained a modern languages degree from the University of Cambridge before beginning a career with the Foreign Office. However, this work was in fact a cover for his real work with the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). In later years, Lockhart became a published author, with works including a biography of Hugh Clapperton and a book about life in an English preparatory school.
