James J. Phillips
James J. "Jim" Phillips is an American college athletic administrator. He is the commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), a position he has held since 2021. Phillips served as the athletic director at Northern Illinois University from 2004 to 2008 and Northwestern University from 2008 to 2021. Phillips is a Chicago native and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, followed by a Master of Education from Arizona State University and a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Tennessee. In 2023, Phillips was accused of covering up widespread hazing and sexual abuse in Northwestern University's football program. Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against Philips in litigation headed by noted civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a collegiate athletic conference located in the eastern United States. Headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina, the ACC's fifteen member universities compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)'s Division I. The Northwestern Wildcats football team represents Northwestern University as an NCAA Division I college football team and member of the Big Ten Conference based near Chicago in Evanston, Illinois. Founded in 1851, Northwestern began playing football in 1882. Its football mascot is the Wildcat, a term coined by a ''Chicago Tribune'' reporter in 1924, after reporting on a football game where the players appeared as "a wall of purple wildcats". Northwestern Football is also known as "Chicago's Big Ten Team" with its proximity and ties to Chicago.
