The Scarlet Ibis
"The Scarlet Ibis" is a short story written by James Hurst. It was first published in ''The Atlantic Monthly'' in July 1960 and won the "Atlantic First" award. The story has become a classic of American literature, and has been frequently republished in high school anthologies and other collections. Plot The narrator, who is not named but simply called "Brother", recounts the life of his younger brother, William Armstrong, nicknamed "Doodle". Doodle is born a sickly child, who is not expected to live because of his birth defects. His family even has a small coffin made in the case of his death, and presumably chooses the robust name 'William Armstrong' because it would look good on a gravestone. Doodle survives, but for most of his childhood, he is unable to move or respond to his environment. James Hurst (politician)
James Abraham Hurst (29 December 1880 – 1 April 1964) was an Australian politician. He was born in Zeehan, Tasmania. In 1910 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly as a Labor member for Darwin, Tasmania. He was defeated in 1912 but returned to the House in 1919, serving in the Lyons Labor government until his resignation in 1926. James Hurst (footballer)
James Hurst (born 31 January 1992) is an English footballer who plays for side Tamworth, where he plays as a defender. His professional career saw him play club football in the Premier League for West Bromwich Albion, in the Football League for Blackpool, Shrewsbury Town, Chesterfield, Birmingham City, Crawley Town and Northampton Town, and in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild for ÍBV and Valur. Internationally, he represented England at levels from under-16 to under-20. Professional career Hurst was born in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands. He came through the ranks at West Bromwich Albion, but declined to sign for them, opting instead for a scholarship with the 2008 FA Cup winners, Portsmouth, who reportedly beat Arsenal, Manchester United and Aston Villa to his signature. James Hurst (baseball)
James Lavon Hurst (born June 1, 1967) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played in with the Texas Rangers. Hurst was selected in the 32nd round of the 1989 Major League Baseball draft out of Florida Southern by the Cleveland Indians. He was assigned to the Reno Silver Sox to begin his career in 1990 but was released after one minor league season in Reno. He was signed by the Rangers in July 1991 and spent the next few years in their farm system. He made his Major League debut on Opening Day of the 1994 season on April 4 at Yankee Stadium against the New York Yankees. He pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Kevin Brown. His final Major League game would come on May 22 of the same season against the Seattle Mariners at the Kingdome. The 1995 season was his last in professional baseball. He was signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2014. He played college football at North Carolina. James Willard Hurst
James Willard Hurst (October 6, 1910 – June 18, 1997) is widely credited as the founder of the modern field of American legal history. Educated at Harvard Law School, from which he graduated in 1935, Hurst was a research assistant to Professor Felix Frankfurter, and later a law clerk to Justice Louis Brandeis. Hurst spent most of his professional career as a professor of law at the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison, Wisconsin. He was Pitt Professor of American History and Institutions at the University of Cambridge in 1967. Jim Hurst is an American bluegrass and country guitarist. He is known primarily as an instrumentalist but has also been credited for vocals with numerous other artists as well as his solo career. Hurst has performed with musicians that include Holly Dunn, Trisha Yearwood, Sara Evans, and Missy Raines. He has also won numerous awards for his work. Career Hurst began his career with playing country music in the 1980s and 90s. He was the guitarist for Holly Dunn and the Rio Band where he played both nationally and internationally. He toured with Trisha Yearwood where he played acoustic and electric guitar. Hurst joined Claire Lynch and the Front Porch String Band in 1995. During that time he met Missy Raines and they formed the duet "Jim Hurst and Missy Raines," playing together until 2000.
