James Howell
James Howell (c. 1594 – 1666) was a 17th-century Anglo-Welsh historian and writer who is in many ways a representative figure of his age. The son of a Welsh clergyman, he was for much of his life in the shadow of his elder brother Thomas Howell, who became Lord Bishop of Bristol. Education In 1613 he gained his B.A. from Jesus College, Oxford – he was to be elected to a fellowship at Jesus College in 1623, but he was never formally admitted and his place was taken by another in 1626. Until he was 13, he was schooled in Hereford. He went to Oxford at the age of 19. Career After graduation, he had a variety of employments, as an administrator for a glass manufacturer, and in the often combined roles of secretary and instructor to several noble families. As factory agent and negotiator he traveled widely in Europe and learned to speak several languages, apparently with great facility. James Howell (politician)
James Howell Jr. (October 16, 1829 – January 27, 1897) was a partner in Howell & Saxtan Ironworks, and served two consecutive terms as 19th Mayor of Brooklyn, New York 1878–1881. Early life Howell was born October 16, 1829 in Bradford, Wiltshire, England. At the age of six he moved with his parents to New Lisbon, Ohio. Howell moved to Brooklyn in 1845. He first tried a career as a grocer, but before long switched careers to become a foreman in an iron foundry. By 1855, he had started the firm of Howell & Saxtan. Howell & Saxtan Howell & Saxtan were in business in Brooklyn, N. Y. from approximately 1866 until the early 1890s. The proprietors were James Howell (1829-1897) and Daniel Y. Saxtan (1824-1904). Their mark can be found on manhole covers and cast iron buildings in Brooklyn, especially around Fulton Avenue and Grand Street, and lower Manhattan. Howells (department Store)
Howells is a large department store located on St Mary Street in Cardiff, Wales. The store was established in Cardiff by James Howell in 1865. It was acquired by the House of Fraser group in 1972 and re-branded as House of Fraser in 2010. History James Howell was the son of a Pembrokeshire farmer. On 21 October 1865 he opened a shop in The Hayes, Cardiff, in a building called Stuart Hall. In August 1867 the drapery shop moved to St Mary Street. By 1892 he had a shop which extended from Trinity Street in the east, to St Mary Street in the west. The first part of the current store was built in the late-19th century, this part of the building includes an ornate facade that is visible on St Mary Street. In the 1920s a large and well-proportioned neoclassical extension was built up to the corner of St Mary Street and Heol-y-Cawl. National Association Of Discharged Sailors And Soldiers
The National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers (NADSS) was a British veterans' organisation. The group was founded in early 1917 at a conference in Blackburn, drawing together various local groups representing working men who had served in World War I but had since been discharged. It campaigned for better pensions, and more opportunities for re-training. Led by James Howell, it developed links with trade unions and the Labour Party. The association sponsored several candidates at the 1918 general election, forming part of what was termed the "Silver Badge Party". Robert Hewitt Barker was elected in Sowerby, having been endorsed by the local branch, but not by the executive, and acting essentially as an independent Conservative. Around this time, the group severed its links with the labour movement, and became more conservative in outlook, moving closer to the Comrades of the Great War group. In 1919, J.M. He played in the football league for Torquay United. He represented England at Schoolboy and Youth level. He is a former member of the Michigan House of Representatives who represented a portion of Saginaw County from 1999 through 2004. He attended Millington High School and is a 1967 graduate of St. Paul's Seminary in Michigan.
