James Harold Thompson
James Harold Thompson (born November 10, 1944) was an American politician in the state of Florida. Thompson was born in Mobile, Alabama. He moved to Florida in 1945 with his family, and later attended Florida State University, earning a Juris Doctor degree. He is an attorney. He served in the Florida House of Representatives in the 10th district from November 5, 1974, to November 2, 1982, and the 8th district from November 2, 1982, to November 4, 1986. Lawton Mainor Chiles Jr. (April 3, 1930 – December 12, 1998) was an American politician who served as the 41st governor of Florida from 1991 until his death in 1998. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as a United States senator from Florida from 1971 to 1989. A Korean War veteran, Chiles later returned to Florida for law school and eventually opened his own private practice in 1955. Three years later, Chiles entered politics with a successful bid for the Florida House of Representatives in 1958, as a member of the Democratic Party. By 1966, Chiles left the Florida House to run for the Florida Senate. Pat Thomas (November 21, 1933 – June 21, 2000) was a North Florida politician and was President of the Florida Senate 1993-1994. He was also President Pro Tempore 1992-1993. Political career Thomas was the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Florida from 1966-70. In October 1974, Thomas unseated the sitting representative for District 10 in the Florida House of Representatives, Jack Burke, in the Democratic primary. He won the general election in November 1972. The following spring, he was one of a bipartisan group of representatives who voted not to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, which lost 64-54, making Florida the 13th state to oppose ratification of the amendment.
