James H. Fields
James H. Fields (June 26, 1920 – June 17, 1970) was a United States Army Captain (United States O-3), captain and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration for valor—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in France during World War II. Biography Fields was born in Caddo, Stephens County, Texas, Caddo, Texas on June 26, 1920. He graduated from the first graduating class from Lamar High School (Houston, Texas), Mirabeau Lamar High School in Houston, Texas in 1939. Caddo is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Stephens County, Texas. According to the ''Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 40 in 2000. Caddo has a post office, with the ZIP code of 76429. Geography Caddo is located at (32.7181802, -98.6683936). It is situated at the junction of U.S. Route 180, U.S. Highway 80, Farm to Market Road 717, and Texas Park Road 33, Park Road 33 in east-central Stephens County, about 10 miles east of Breckenridge, Texas, Breckenridge. History The community, which takes its name from being located on a former Caddo, Caddo Indian campsite, was established in the late 1870s. By 1880, Caddo had an estimated population of 60 with two churches, a school, and a post office. The number of residents had grown to 75 in 1890 and 149 in 1900. The American Campaign Medal is a military award of the United States Armed Forces which was first created on November 6, 1942, by issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Good Conduct Medal is one of the oldest military awards of the United States Armed Forces. The Bronze Star Medal (BSM) is a United States Armed Forces decoration awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone. When the medal is awarded by the Army, Air Force, or Space Force for acts of valor in combat, the "V" device is authorized for wear on the medal. The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) is the United States Army's second highest military decoration for soldiers who display extraordinary heroism in combat with an armed enemy force. Actions that merit the Distinguished Service Cross must be of such a high degree that they are above those required for all other U.S. combat decorations, but which do not meet the criteria for the Medal of Honor. Major General Hugh Joseph Gaffey (November 18, 1895 – June 16, 1946) was a senior United States Army officer. He was a career officer who served in both World War I and World War II. Early life and military career Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Gaffey graduated from Worcester Academy in 1916 and later attended Officers Training School at Fort Niagara, New York, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Field Artillery Branch of the United States Army Reserve on August 15, 1917, four months after the American entry into World War I. Assigned to the 312th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 79th Division, at Fort Meade, Maryland, in August 1918 he was sent to the Western Front to serve with the American Expeditionary Force (AEF).
