James H. Cravens
James Harrison Cravens (August 12, 1802 – December 4, 1876) was a U.S. Representative from Indiana, second cousin of James Addison Cravens. Biography Born on August 12, 1802 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Cravens studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1823 and commenced practice in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He moved to Franklin, Pennsylvania, in 1823 and resumed the practice of law. He moved to Madison, Indiana, in 1829 and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He served as member of the State house of representatives in 1831 and 1832. He moved to Ripley County, Indiana, in 1833, where he practiced law and managed a farm. He served as member of the State senate in 1839. Cravens was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841 – March 4, 1843). Osgood, Indiana
Osgood is a town in Center Township, Ripley County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,624 at the 2010 census. History Osgood was platted in 1854 when the railroad was extended to that point. The town was named for A. L. Osgood, a railroad official. A post office called Osgood has been in operation since 1855. In the 1890s, Osgood was a sundown town, where African Americans were not allowed to reside. By then, Osgood was still much more closely connected to Cincinnati than Indianapolis in terms of trade. In 1999, the community received a $23 million bequest from the Gilmore and Golda Reynolds Foundation, which was established by two lifelong Osgood residents to assist the town government as well as local non-profit organizations. Caleb Blood Smith (April 16, 1808 – January 7, 1864) was a United States Representative from Indiana, the 6th United States Secretary of the Interior and a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Indiana. Education and career Born on April 16, 1808, in Boston, Massachusetts, Smith moved with his parents to Ohio in 1814. He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, from 1825 to 1826, Cincinnati College (now the University of Cincinnati) and read law in 1828. He entered private practice in Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana, from 1828 to 1843. He was founder and editor of the ''Indiana Sentinel'' in 1832. Thomas Smith (May 1, 1799 – April 12, 1876) was an American tradesman who served three terms as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Indiana from 1839 to 1841, and again from 1843 to 1847. Biography Smith was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. In 1818, he moved to Rising Sun, Indiana, where he learned the trade of tanning. He then moved to Versailles, Indiana in 1821 and established a tanyard. Political career Smith eventually became a colonel in the state militia, and member of the Indiana House of Representatives in 1829, 1830, and from 1833 to 1836. He also served in the state senate from 1836 to 1839. Smith was elected as a Democratic Representative for Indiana's 4th congressional district to the Twenty-Sixth Congress, which lasted from March 4, 1839 until March 3, 1841.
