James Gray (Australian Politician)
James Gray (1820 – 21 January 1889) was an Australian politician. Gray was born in Ballybay in County Monaghan in 1820. In 1843 he was found guilty of subornation to perjury and transported to Tasmania, where he arrived in 1844. He received his ticket of leave in 1847 and became a free man in 1853. In 1872 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly, representing the seat of Electoral district of West Hobart, West Hobart. He served until 1877. He later represented Electoral district of Sorell, Sorell from 1882 until his death in 1889. Tasmanian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. The Assembly has 25 members, elected for a term of up to four years, with five members being elected in each of five electorates, called divisions. Each division has approximately the same number of electors. Voting for the House of Assembly is by a form of proportional representation using the single transferable vote (STV), known as the Hare-Clark electoral system. John Balfe
John Donnellan Balfe (1816 – 13 December 1880) was an Australian politician, member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. Early life Balfe was the son of James Balfe and Sara Sutherland his wife, daughter of the last Lord Duffus, was born at Sallybrook, Drumcondra, Ireland. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College, near Dublin, conducted by Jesuits, where he received a good classical education. After leaving college he joined the Life Guards, and was stationed at Windsor for two years. He was one of those detailed to escort the Queen on her marriage from Windsor Castle to Buckingham Palace. Balfe took an active part in the political affairs of Ireland, and became a prominent member of the Repeal Association under O'Connell. He was one of the declaimers at Conciliation Hall, and warmly advocated the redress of Irish grievances. Ballybay () is a town and civil parish in County Monaghan, Ireland. The town is centred on the crossroads of the R183 and R162 regional roads. Geography The town is the meeting point for roads going to Monaghan, Castleblayney, Carrickmacross and Clones. The town grew up from the convergence of the roads.
