James Garland (Virginia Politician)
James Garland (June 6, 1791 – August 8, 1885) was a nineteenth-century politician, military officer, planter, lawyer and judge from Virginia. Early and family life Born in Ivy Depot, Albemarle County, Virginia, James Garland was the eldest of four sons born to Hudson Martin Garland (1773-1863) and his wife, the former Elizabeth Penn (''née'' Phillips) Garland (1763-1846). His mother was the grandniece of William Penn. His father was one of many lawyer Garlands in Albemarle County, but moved to Amherst County (from which Nelson County was divided) after the death of his father (another James Garland) in 1781. Hudson Garland represented Amherst County in the Virginia General Assembly for one term (December 3, 1804 – February 1, 1805) and served as a captain in the war of 1812. James Garland (Australian Politician)
James Garland (13 August 1813 – 17 November 1904) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for one term between 1856 and 1857. Early life Garland was born in Aberdeenshire and was the son of a tenant farmer. He was mentored by two Presbyterian clergymen and through their sponsorship he was educated at King's College, Aberdeen. Garland purchased an army commission and was transferred with the 28th Regiment to New South Wales in 1836. He left the army in 1837 and accrued significant pastoral interests. With Edward Bingham he established a stock and station agency in Tamworth but was bankrupted through this endeavour in 1861. He was the Superintendent of Police in Tamworth between 1862 and 1882. James Henry Garland (born December 13, 1931) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. Garland served as bishop of the Diocese of Marquette in Michigan from 1992 to 2005 and as an auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Cincinnati in Ohio from 1984 to 1992. Biography Early life and education Garland was born in 1931 to a farm family in Wilmington, Ohio. He has four brothers and two sisters.In 1953, Garland graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Education degree. That same year, he began seminary studies, graduating from Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary of the West in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a Master of Education degree in 1960.
