James Framo
James Framo (1922–2001) was an American psychologist and pioneer family therapist. He collaborated with other pioneers in the field and authored or co-authored several early and significant texts in the field of family therapy. James was born and raised in South Philadelphia and graduated from South Philadelphia High School in 1940. The last chapter of his 1992 publication ''Family-of-Origin Therapy: An Intergenerational Approach'' provides a personal account of his own early family experiences which served as a basis for his insights into the impact of families on individuals. Psychologist
A psychologist is a professional who practices psychology and studies mental states, perceptual, cognitive, emotional, and social processes and behavior. Family Therapy
Family therapy (also referred to as family counseling, family systems therapy, marriage and family therapy, couple and family therapy) is a branch of psychology and clinical social work that works with families and couples in intimate relationships to nurture change and development. It tends to view change in terms of the systems of interaction between family members. The different schools of family therapy have in common a belief that, regardless of the origin of the problem, and regardless of whether the clients consider it an "individual" or "family" issue, involving families in solutions often benefits clients. Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy
Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy (May 19, 1920 – January 28, 2007) was a Hungarian-American psychiatrist and one of the founders of the field of family therapy. Born Iván Nagy, his family name was changed to Böszörményi-Nagy during his childhood. He emigrated from Hungary to the United States in 1950, and he simplified his name to Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy at the time of his naturalization as a US citizen. Contextual therapy Boszormenyi-Nagy is best known for developing the ''Contextual'' approach to family therapy and individual psychotherapy. Nathan Ackerman
Nathan W. Ackerman (November 22, 1908, Bessarabia, Russian Empire – June 12, 1971, New York) was an American psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and one of the most important pioneers of the field of family therapy. He also was an expert in marriage counselling. Biography Ackerman was born to David Ackerman and Bertha Greenberg, both pharmacists. Ackerman obtained his medical degree from Columbia University in 1933. He assumed the post of chief psychiatrist at the ''Menninger Child Guidance Clinic'' (see Menninger Foundation) in 1937. In 1955, he contributed to the founding of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis. In 1957 he founded the ''Family Mental Health Clinic'' in New York, and the ''Family Institute'' in 1960, which was later renamed the Ackerman Institute after his death in New York in 1971.
