James Ewan
James Ewan J.P. () was a Scottish-born Australian financier, mercantilist, and philanthropist. He held a number of high-profile financial positions, including being a long time partner in John Frazer and Co., Chairman of the Australia Steam Navigation Company, City Bank of Sydney, and the United Insurance Company. Ewan made considerable philanthropic donations to the Sydney Hospital, Benevolent Society, Presbyterian Church, the Women's Guild, and the Nepean Cottage Hospital (now known as the Nepean Hospital). Personal life James Ewan was born on the 18th of July 1843 near Leith Walk, Edinburgh to headmaster and geography author father of the same name, and mother Mary née Blair. ''The Evening News'' was the first evening newspaper published in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was published from 29 July 1867 to 21 March 1931. The Sunday edition was published as the ''Sunday News''. History ''The Evening News'' was founded in 1867 by Samuel Bennett and was regarded as a "less serious read" than other Sydney newspapers. In 1875 labour difficulties forced Bennett to merge ''The Evening News'' with another of his papers, '' The Empire''. The Australasian Steam Navigation Company (ASN Co) was a shipping company of Australia which operated between 1839 and 1887. Company history The company was started as the Hunter River Steam Navigation Company in 1839. In March 1851, the company was reformed as the Australasian Steam Navigation Company. James Watson (Australian Politician)
James Watson (17 December 1837 – 30 October 1907) was an Australian politician, Colonial Treasurer of New South Wales 1878 to 1883. Early life Watson was born at Portadown, in County Armagh, Ireland, and educated at the Church of England school in his native town. He emigrated to the colony of New South Wales early in life, and engaged in mercantile pursuits, initially in partnership with his brothers at Lambing Flat (Young). Provisions for their store were obtained from John Frazer & Co., a partnership between John Frazer and his brother in law James Ewan. Frazer retired from the running of the business in 1869 and Watson joined Ewan as a partner in the firm. On 8 April 1871 Watson married Margaret Salmon Ewan, another of Ewan's sisters. Bright's Disease
Bright's disease is a historical classification of kidney diseases that are described in modern medicine as acute or chronic nephritis. It was characterized by swelling and the presence of albumin in the urine, and was frequently accompanied by high blood pressure and heart disease. Signs and symptoms The symptoms and signs of Bright's disease were first described in 1827 by the English physician Richard Bright, after whom the disease was named. In his ''Reports of Medical Cases'', he described 25 cases of dropsy ( edema) which he attributed to kidney disease. Symptoms and signs included: inflammation of serous membranes, hemorrhages, apoplexy, convulsions, blindness and coma. Many of these cases were found to have albumin in their urine (detected by the spoon and candle-heat coagulation), and showed striking morbid changes of the kidneys at autopsy. Influenza
Influenza, commonly known as "the flu", is an infectious disease caused by influenza viruses. Symptoms range from mild to severe and often include fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pain, headache, coughing, and fatigue. Glenleigh Estate is a heritage-listed private residence located at 427 Mulgoa Road in the western Sydney suburb of Regentville in the City of Penrith local government area of New South Wales, Australia. George Reid
Sir George Houston Reid, (25 February 1845 – 12 September 1918) was an Australian politician who led the Reid Government as the fourth Prime Minister of Australia from 1904 to 1905, having previously been Premier of New South Wales from 1894 to 1899. He led the Free Trade Party from 1891 to 1908. Reid was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He and his family immigrated to Australia when he was young. They initially settled in Melbourne, but moved to Sydney when Reid was 13, at which point he left school and began working as a clerk. He later joined the New South Wales civil service, and rose through the ranks to become secretary of the Attorney-General's Department.
