James E. Bracken
James E. Bracken (March 12, 1918 – April 19, 2008) was an American Thoroughbred horse racing trainer based in Florida. Background Bracken began his career in horse racing in 1935 at Jefferson Downs Racetrack in New Orleans. He began as a galloper before becoming a jockey, and while that did not last long he was able to become a jockey agent. Among his clients were several future Hall of Fame inductees including John Adams, Bill Hartack, Bill Shoemaker, Jacinto Vásquez and Walter Blum. Azalea Stakes
The Azalea Stakes is a race for Thoroughbred horses once run at Calder Race Course in Miami Gardens, Florida on the Summit of Speed Day each year. Since 2015, the Azalea is now run at Gulfstream Park due to racing negotiations between the two Florida racetracks. Inaugurated in 1975 as the Azalea Handicap, the race is open to three-year-old fillies willing to race seven furlongs on the dirt. The listed race carries a purse of $100,000. Tropical Park Race Track
Tropical Park Race Track was a horse racing facility built on at the current intersection of Bird Road and the Palmetto Expressway in Southwest Dade Miami part of metropolitan Miami, Florida and what is now Olympia Heights. The race track was built by Bill Dwyer, a prohibition era bootlegger, and Frank Bruen with backing from Canadian distilling tycoon, Samuel Bronfman. It opened on December 26, 1931, and closed January 15, 1972. The track hosted meets for both for Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses. Tropical Park introduced the first synthetic racetrack surface for horse racing in the 1966-67 season. Known as "Tartan Turf, " it was a rubberized surface manufactured by the 3M company. The J J's Dream Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually during the first part of July at Calder Race Course in Miami Gardens, Florida. Open to two-year-old fillies, it is contested on dirt over a distance of six furlongs. Inaugurated in 1976 as the Melaleuca Stakes, it was open to three years old fillies for its first three runnings. From 1997 through 1999, the race was run as the Masao Moriya Stakes.
