James Disney (politician)
Sir James Stanley Disney (17 June 1896 – 20 January 1952) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat to Arthur Disney and Isabella Christina Hill. During World War I he served with the Australian Flying Corps and was at Gallipoli. He then became a motor dealer, running his own company. In June 1924 he married Ruby Chapman. From 1935 to 1952 he served on Melbourne City Council. He was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council in 1940 as a United Australia Party member, representing Higinbotham Province; at this time his father still represented Melbourne West for the Labor Party. Disney was a supporter of Ian Macfarlan, and served in his brief ministry in October–November 1945 as Minister of Transport and Mines. He consequently lost Liberal endorsement in 1946 and was defeated. Ballarat, Victoria
Ballarat ( ) is a city in the Central Highlands of Victoria, Australia. At the 2021 Census, Ballarat had a population of 116,201, making it the third largest city in Victoria. Estimated resident population, 30 June 2018. Within months of Victoria separating from the colony of New South Wales in 1851, gold was discovered near Ballarat, sparking the Victorian gold rush. Ballarat subsequently became a thriving boomtown that for a time rivalled Melbourne, the capital of Victoria, in terms of wealth and cultural influence. In 1854, following a period of civil disobedience in Ballarat over gold licenses, local miners launched an armed uprising against government forces. Known as the Eureka Rebellion, it led to the introduction of male suffrage in Australia, and as such is interpreted as the origin of Australian democracy. Auburn is an unbounded neighbourhood of the suburb of Hawthorn, Melbourne, Australia, in the state of Victoria. Its postcode is 3123. It is in the local government areas of the City of Boroondara. The area is renowned for its outstanding commercial Victorian architecture, including the "Auburn Hotel" (formerly the "Geebung Polo Club"), a giant 3-storey coffee palace in the Second Empire style built in 1888, part of a well-preserved streetscape on Auburn Road. Oliver John Nilsen
Oliver John Nilsen CBE JP (17 August 1884 – 24 October 1977) was an Australian businessman and Lord Mayor of Melbourne. Background Born in Collingwood in Melbourne, Victoria, Nilsen was educated at Rathdowne Street State School, Carlton and the Working Men's College. On 4 September 1907 Nilsen married Ethel Margaret Williams at the Fitzroy Presbyterian Church. In 1916 he established Oliver J. Nilsen & Co. (later Oliver J. Nilsen (Australia) Ltd), an electrical business, which moved to 45 Bourke Street in 1924. In later life he lived in Kooyong Road, Caulfield, Victoria; and every Christmas he would decorate an enormous tree on his front lawn with electric lights, long before it became the fashion to do so. 3UZ Nilsen is recorded personally with an experimental licence (receive only) in 1923 and his firm was allocated an experimental transmitting licence with callsign 3UZ in 1924.
