James Dick (philanthropist)
James Dick ( – ) was a Scottish merchant, philanthropist and slave trader. Born in Forres, County of Moray, Dick left Scotland at the age of 19 and travelled to the West Indies, settling down in Kingston, Jamaica as a clerk in a local merchant house. In Jamaica, he established his own business importing enslaved people and exporting local produce to London, in the process becoming immensely wealthy. Dick returned to Britain and died . Following his death, he bequeathed £113,787 to improve teaching among the schoolmasters in Scotland, which became known as the ''Dick Bequest''. In recent years, the bequest has become controversial due to Dick's involvement in the Atlantic slave trade. Life James Dick was born in Forres, County of Moray. Sir James Dick of Prestonfield (15 November 1728) was a 17th and 18th century Scottish merchant who served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1679 to 1681. He was the first Baronet of Prestonfield and was progenitor to the Dick baronets. Life Dick was born around 1644. He the son of Alexander Dick and his wife Helen Rocheid. Alexander Dick was the son of William Dick of Braid, a statesman who was Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1638 to 1640, and who had loaned the city £45,000 in 1646. Dick was a merchant and Dean of Guild in Edinburgh. He purchased the Priestfield estate, including Priestfield House, in 1677. In 1679 he was elected Lord Provost of Edinburgh under the title of James Dick of Priestfield, in succession to Sir Francis Kinloch. In 1681/82 he was the Member of Parliament for Edinburgh. John Michael Toland (born August 31, 1973) is a former American professional wrestler, better known by his ring name, Tank Toland. Toland is best known for his appearances on the independent circuit with promotions such as Ring of Honor, as well as his appearances with World Wrestling Entertainment on its '' SmackDown!'' brand in 2005 to 2006 as James Dick.
