James Curtis (author)
James Curtis (4 July 1907 – 1977) was a British writer who was best known for his novels, ''They Drive By Night'' and ''There Ain't No Justice'', both of which were made into feature films. Life James Curtis was born Geoffrey Basil Maiden, in Sturry, Kent on 4 July 1907. He was privately educated in Kent and after leaving school he moved to London. In 1934, Curtis appeared in two films, '' Manhattan Melodrama'' and ''Fugitive Lady'', in uncredited roles. He later adopted the pseudonym of James Curtis and began a career as an author. In total he wrote six novels as well as, at least, one work of political observations. Curtis was forced to stop writing when World War II broke out. He would go on to tour France and Burma and rose to the rank of Major. After the war, his marriage had failed and his literary momentum never recovered. Ernest Frederic Graham Thesiger, CBE (15 January 1879 – 14 January 1961) was an English stage and film actor. ''Ten Days in Paris'', also known as ''Missing Ten Days'' and ''Spy in the Pantry'', is a 1940 British spy film directed by Tim Whelan and starring Rex Harrison, Kaaren Verne and C. V. France. Frederick Penrose "Pen" Tennyson (26 August 1912 – 7 July 1941) was a British film director whose promising career was cut short when he died in a plane crash. Tennyson gained experience as an assistant director to Alfred Hitchcock in several of his British films during the 1930s. Tennyson directed three films between 1939 and his death in 1941. Background Tennyson was the eldest of three sons of Charles Tennyson, through whom he was a great-grandson of the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. He went to Eton College and married actress Nova Pilbeam in 1939. Film career Tennyson entered the film industry in May 1932 after his mother introduced him to C.M. ''There Ain't No Justice'' is a 1939 British sports drama film directed by Pen Tennyson and starring Jimmy Hanley, Edward Chapman and Edward Rigby. The film is based on the 1937 novel of the same name by James Curtis. Plot summary Tommy Mutch (Jimmy Hanley) is a garage mechanic and small-time boxer. With his family in financial difficulty he needs to find money in a hurry. As luck would have it he meets boxing manager Sammy Sanders (Edward Chapman). Sammy assures Tommy he can get him lucrative main event bouts. Tommy is promoted as the next boxing star which is reinforced with a series of convincing wins. However, Tommy discovers that the bouts were fixed by a gambling syndicate. He realises now that he has been set up by his manager and is expected to take a fall. He has little choice but to go-ahead but needs to come up with a plan. One that will guarantee a financial return for his family while also hitting the syndicates in the pocket.
