James Stanier Clarke
James Stanier Clarke (1766–1834) was an English cleric, naval author and man of letters. He became librarian in 1799 to George, Prince of Wales (later Prince Regent, then George IV). Early life The eldest son of Edward Clarke and Anne Grenfield, and brother of Edward Daniel Clarke, he was born on 17 December 1766 at Mahon, Minorca where his father was at the time chaplain to the governor. He was educated at Uckfield School and then at Tonbridge School under Vicesimus Knox. Matriculating at St John's College, Cambridge in 1784, he did not complete a first degree. Having taken holy orders, Clarke was in 1790 appointed to the rectory of Preston, Sussex. About the beginning of 1791 he was living in Sussex with his mother, taking in the refugee Anthony Charles Cazenove for half a year. James Freeman Clarke (April 4, 1810 – June 8, 1888) was an American minister, theologian and author. James Fernandez Clarke
James Fernandez Clarke (1812–1876) was an English surgeon and medical writer. Life Clarke was born at Olney, Buckinghamshire; his father and grandfather were prosperous lace merchants. After one or two brief apprenticeships, in 1828 he was placed under C. Snitch, a general practitioner, in Brydges Street, Covent Garden. Here he managed to get the run of Thomas Cadell the younger's library in the Strand, and became acquainted with literature and literary people. In October 1833 Clarke entered at Dermott's Medical School in Gerrard Street, Soho, as a medical student. For a time he acted as Dermott's amanuensis, and afterwards aided Michael Ryan in the ''London Medical and Surgical Journal''. In 1834 Robert Liston noticed a report by Clarke of one of his cases, and introduced him to Thomas Wakley, editor of ''The Lancet''; who took on Clarke. James Clarke ( 27 May 1798 – 23 September 1861) was an English antiquary, archaeologist, shopkeeper, and amateur poet. He published numerous minor articles on the antiquities of his home county, Suffolk, and a volume of doggerel verse. Biography James Clarke was born to William Clarke and his wife, Mary Cook, in Bedingfield, Suffolk. Here, he was baptised on 27 May 1798. His first occupation was as a grocer and draper in Suffolk, his shop established opposite the gates of Easton Park, the residence of the dukes of Hamilton, and near Wickham Market. On 12 April 1821, he married Jane Louisa Clamp, ''née'' Clonmel. Together, they had four children - three sons and a daughter - between 1826 and 1844. Clarke was a keen antiquary, particularly for those antiquities of his local area. In 1847, he became an associate of the British Archaeological Association (BAA), which, the BAA stated in their obituary of Clarke, "proved a great source of improvement and enjoyment" for him. James Clarke (rower)
James Clarke (born 31 December 1984) is a British lightweight rower. He learned to row at St Paul's School, London and went on to row for Durham University, under the tutelage of Wade Hall-Craggs. Clarke was a member of St Cuthbert's Society and graduated in 2006. He won a gold medal at the 2007 World Rowing Championships in Munich with the lightweight men's four. He competed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, coming 5th. Following the 2008 season he changed weight categories, switching to compete in the open weight category. He gained selection for the GB men's heavyweight squad, competing in the men's eight in 2009, finishing 5th and then in 2010 winning a silver medal at the Karapiro World Championships in New Zealand.
