James Clark (Dunedin Mayor)
James John Clark (29 July 1870 – 20 January 1936) was a New Zealand politician. He served as mayor of Dunedin from 1915 to 1919. Biography Born in Riverton in 1870, Clark was the youngest son of Presbyterian minister Reverend James Clark, and his wife, Margaret Munro Clark. A few months later, the family moved to Palmerston. Clark moved to Dunedin in 1895, where he remained for the rest of his life. Clark was first elected as a Dunedin city councillor in 1909. He became mayor in 1915, and was the first person to hold the office for four consecutive years. He remained on the city council until 1921, when he did not seek re-election, but again served as a city councillor from 1923 until 1933. Clark twice stood as the Reform Party candidate for the Dunedin North parliamentary seat. In the 1922 Dunedin North by-election, he finished second, 120 votes behind the Labour candidate, Jim Munro. John Shacklock
John Bradley Shacklock (30 January 1865 – 12 July 1935) was a New Zealand iron founder and politician. He served as mayor of Dunedin from 1914 to 1915. Early life and family Shacklock was born in Oamaru on 16 April 1872. His father, Henry Ely Shacklock, was a manufacturer known for producing the Shacklock coal range, and his mother was Elisabeth Shacklock (née Bradley). He lived in Dunedin from 1873, and was educated at the Dunedin Collegiate School for Boys. In 1890, Shacklock married Ada Ralph, and the couple went on to have three children. Manufacturing and business career In 1978, Shacklock began working at his father's foundry. He stayed with the firm for the remainder of his life; it was formed into a private company, H. E. The Mayor of Dunedin is the head of the local government, the city council of Dunedin, New Zealand. The Mayor's role is "to provide leadership to the other elected members of the territorial authority, be a leader in the community and perform civic duties". The Mayor is directly elected, using the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system from 2007. The current mayor is Jules Radich who was elected in 2022. Dunedin Northern Cemetery
The Dunedin Northern Cemetery is a major historic cemetery in the southern New Zealand city of Dunedin. It is located on a sloping site close to Lovelock Avenue on a spur of Signal Hill close to the Dunedin Botanic Gardens and the suburb of Opoho, overlooking Dunedin North and Logan Park. The site was set aside in 1872, with the last plot being purchased in 1937. The cemetery forms part of Dunedin's Town belt, a green belt surrounding the inner city. Unlike many cemeteries of its age, Dunedin Northern Cemetery is not divided by denomination, and with its landscapes and wooded slopes remains an important part of the city's Victorian landscape. The cemetery contains many notable graves and tombs, most prominently the mausoleum of William Larnach, designed by R.A. Lawson as a miniature replica of First Church.
