James Caulfeild, 8th Viscount Charlemont
James Edward Caulfeild, 8th Viscount Charlemont, PC (NI), DL (12 May 1880 – 20 August 1949) was an Irish Peer, elected to the British House of Lords as a Representative Peer and to the Parliament of Northern Ireland as a Senator. He sat in Stormont's upper house from 1925 to 1937 and was Minister for Education for all but the first of his years. Lord Charlemont was born in London to an Irish family, son of the Hon. Marcus Caulfeild, CB, and Gwyn Williams (granddaughter of Sir Robert Williams, Bart.). Educated at Winchester, he married twice; firstly to Evelyn Hull of Park Gate House, Surrey and secondly in 1940 to Hildegarde Slock-Cottell of Belgium. Lord Charlemont lived at Newcastle, County Down. He was the first President and co-founder of The Irish Association for Cultural, Economic and Social Relations. He inherited the Viscountcy of Charlemont and Barony of Caulfeild from his uncle in 1913. Having no children, the titles passed on his death to his cousin. References ... The Leader of the Senate of Northern Ireland was the Leader of the House in the Senate of Northern Ireland. The post was a cabinet position that was nevertheless politically unimportant. In his memoirs, Brian Faulkner expresses surprise that Jack Andrews accepted the position, as he saw it as a demotion. The Deputy Leader of the Senate of Northern Ireland was the third-ranking position in the Senate, after the Leader and the Speaker. The position of Deputy Leader was established, along with the Senate itself, in 1921, and the position was abolished in 1961. Irish Representative Peers
In the United Kingdom, representative peers were those peers elected by the members of the Peerage of Scotland and the Peerage of Ireland to sit in the British House of Lords. Until 1999, all members of the Peerage of England held the right to sit in the House of Lords; they did not elect a limited group of representatives. All peers who were created after 1707 as Peers of Great Britain and after 1801 as Peers of the United Kingdom held the same right to sit in the House of Lords. Representative peers were introduced in 1707, when the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland were united into the Kingdom of Great Britain. Viscount Charlemont
Viscount Charlemont is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1665 for William Caulfeild, 5th Baron Charlemont. The Caulfeild family descends from Sir Toby Caulfeild, originally of Oxfordshire, England. He was a noted soldier and also represented Armagh in the Irish House of Commons. In 1620 he was created Lord Caulfeild, Baron of Charlemont, in the Peerage of Ireland, with remainder to his nephew Sir William Caulfeild, who succeeded him as second Baron. The latter's son, the third Baron, was shot in 1642 on the orders of Sir Phelim O'Neill, the leader of the Irish Rebellion of 1641. His younger brother, the fifth Baron, had O'Neill apprehended and executed for the murder of his elder brother. In 1665 he was created Viscount Charlemont in the Peerage of Ireland.
