James C. Dozier
James Cordie Dozier (February 17, 1885 – October 24, 1974) was a native of South Carolina and a United States Army officer who received the Medal of Honor for heroism on October 8, 1918, during World War I. Early life Dozier was born on February 17, 1885, at Galivants Ferry in Horry County. The descendant of a long line of Palmetto State Citizen-Soldiers who had served from the American Revolution, through the Spanish–American War, Dozier began his military career with Company H, 118th Infantry Regiment on September 3, 1904. In August 1916, Dozier was sent with the 118th Infantry Regiment to El Paso, TX. There, they joined Brig. Gen. John J. "Blackjack" Pershing's Punitive Expedition to protect U.S. border towns from Mexican General Pancho Villa's forces. Company H returned home to S.C. in December. Galivants Ferry, South Carolina
Galivants Ferry is an unincorporated community in Horry County, South Carolina, United States. It lies on the Little Pee Dee River west of Aynor on U.S. Route 501. History Galivants Ferry was first mentioned in the South Carolina Statutes-at-Large of 1792 at a place then called Elirsee's Landing. The ferry crossing was vested with Richard Gallivant for an initial period of fourteen years and the permitted fees were stated in British pounds sterling. At that time, the county name was Kingston County and the county seat was Conwayboro. The ferry crossing was again mentioned in the 1795 South Carolina Acts relating to Roads, Bridges, and Ferries, with "Elvise's Landing" being vested with Richard Gallivant and the fees paid in U.S. dollars. The ''Croix de guerre 1914–1918'' ( en, War Cross) is a French military decoration, the first version of the '' Croix de Guerre''. It was created to recognize French and allied soldiers who were cited for valorous service during World War I, similar to the British ''mentioned in dispatches'' but with multiple degrees equivalent to other nations' decorations for courage.
