James Burton
James Edward Burton (born August 21, 1939, in Dubberly, Louisiana) is an American guitarist. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 2001 (his induction speech was given by longtime fan Keith Richards), Burton has also been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. Critic Mark Deming writes that "Burton has a well-deserved reputation as one of the finest guitar pickers in either country or rock ... Burton is one of the best guitar players to ever touch a fretboard." He is ranked number 19 in Rolling Stone list of 100 Greatest Guitarists. Jim Scott Burton (October 27, 1949 – December 12, 2013) was a middle relief pitcher who played for the Boston Red Sox in the 1975 and 1977 seasons. Listed at , , Burton batted right-handed and threw left-handed. He was born in Royal Oak, Michigan. The Red Sox drafted Burton out of the University of Michigan in the first round (5th pick) of the 1971 draft. He was 25 years old when he made his major league debut on June 10, 1975. His uniform number was 43. Professional career Burton is best known as the losing pitcher of Game 7 of the 1975 World Series. After Red Sox manager Darrell Johnson pinch hit for closer Jim Willoughby in the bottom of the eighth inning, Burton was sent to the mound for the top of the ninth inning to face the Cincinnati Reds in a 3–3 tied game. James Burton (November 6, 1963 – January 5, 2015) was a professional ice hockey defenceman. Awards Burton was a three-time winner of the IHL's Governor's Trophy (Larry D. Gordon Trophy) which is awarded annually to the defenseman voted to be most outstanding based on performance over the course of the regular season by the league's coaches. James Burton (born 1974) is a British conductor and composer. He is currently the Boston Symphony Orchestra Choral Director and Conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. He also holds the position oDirector of Orchestral Activities and Master Lecturer in Musicat Boston University. Early life and education Born in London, Burton studied at Westminster Abbey Choir School and he became head chorister of the Choir of Westminster Abbey in 1987. He was awarded a music scholarship to Radley College, and a choral scholarship to St John's College, Cambridge, where his initial interest in conducting was encouraged by Christopher Robinson. Burton holds a master's degree from the Peabody Conservatory, where he studied orchestral conducting with Frederik Prausnitz and Gustav Meier. James Burton (1784 – 1868) was born in Clitheroe in 1784 and owned several cotton mills in Tyldesley and Hindsford in the middle of the 19th century. Burton moved to Tildsley Banks in 1828 where he entered into partnership with John and Richard Jones at Tyldesley New Mill but the brothers were more interested in silk weaving and moved to Bedford. By 1838 he owned many properties in the west end of the town, where he lived in Charles Street, and in Hindsford across the Hindsford Brook. In 1845 his firm was named Burton, Chippendale and Company but the partnership was dissolved. James Burton & Sons was the biggest mill-owning business in the area in the middle of the 19th century. Burton built a cluster of cotton mills in Hindsford starting with Atherton Mill in 1839, followed by Lodge Mill in 1853, Field Mill in 1856, and Westfield Mill in 1860, all of which were supplied with water by the Hindsford Brook. James Burton (1 May 1745 – 30 Jun 1825), was an English priest from Northamptonshire. He was a senior canon of Christ Church, Oxford (1793–1825) and chaplain to King George III. He was the older brother of the barrister and judge, Charles Burton. Biography Early life Burton was born in Aynho, the son of Francis Burton (1709–1777), a member of a family that could trace its descent from Ingenulfe de Burton who came to England with William the Conqueror. His mother was Anne Burton, née Singer (1716–1792). Burton was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, entering as a chorister in 1755 and matriculating as an undergraduate in 1761.
