James Burnett, Lord Monboddo
James Burnett, Lord Monboddo (baptised 25 October 1714; died 26 May 1799) was a Scottish judge, scholar of linguistic evolution, philosopher and deist. He is most famous today as a founder of modern comparative historical linguistics. In 1767 he became a judge in the Court of Session. As such, Burnett adopted an honorary title based on the name of his father's estate and family seat, Monboddo House. Monboddo was one of a number of scholars involved at the time in development of early concepts of biological evolution. Some credit him with anticipating in principle the idea of natural selection that was read by (and acknowledged in the writings of) Erasmus Darwin. Charles Darwin read the works of his grandfather Erasmus and later developed the ideas into a scientific theory. James Charles Burnett
James Charles Burnett (1815—1854) a.k.a. "John" was a surveyor and explorer in New South Wales (including Queensland), Australia. He was the head of the first Survey Office established at Brisbane in 1844. Note, the separation of Queensland from New South Wales did not occur until 1859 and so the name ''Queensland'' was not used in Burnett's lifetime. Early life James Charles Burnett was born in North Britain (possibly Scotland), the son of William Burnett. He emigrated as a young child with his family to New South Wales where his father established ''Burnettland'' near Raymond Terrace in the Hunter River district. Surveying career In 1834 he entered the service of the Survey department of New South Wales, spending a considerable period in the Illawarra district. Burnett was selected by Sir Thomas Mitchell to lead a survey to trace the Great Dividing Range from south of Hanging Rock northward towards Moreton Bay. Major-General Sir James Lauderdale Gilbert Burnett, 13th Baronet, (1 April 1880 – 13 August 1953) was a British Army officer. Military career Born the son of Colonel Sir Thomas Burnett, 12th Baronet and Mary Elizabeth Cumine and educated at Wellington College, Burnett was commissioned into the Gordon Highlanders on 6 December 1899. He was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order in March 1915 and subsequently commanded the 1st Battalion, the Gordon Highlanders and then a brigade during the First World War. He went on to be commander of 14th Infantry Brigade in January 1927, commander of 153rd Infantry Brigade in January 1928 and commander of 8th Infantry Brigade in March 1930. His last appointment was as General Officer Commanding 51st (Highland) Division in June 1931 before retiring in June 1935. He was colonel of the Gordon Highlanders from 1939 to 1948.
