James Britton (painter)
James Britton, American painter (1878–1936), born in Hartford, Connecticut. Trained as a realist painter with noted Connecticut artist Charles Noel Flagg, he worked for a short period as staff artist for The Hartford Times, and then as an art critic for The Hartford Courant. Britton was a prolific painter, earning his living for the most part from painting portraits and for his pleasure landscapes, as well as woodblock prints and drawings. He was also often short of money, which meant that instead of being able to buy new canvases for his work he simply painted over what he happened to have at hand. Among his surviving works are several paintings on cereal boxes and in one case a small egg carton, as well as a large number of very small postcard-sized landscapes . He painted at various times in his native Connecticut, New York City, and Sag Harbor. James Clelland Britton
James Cleland "Bubs" Britton (April 24, 1903 – March 30, 1984) was a Canadian diplomat and sportsman. He was appointed Chargé d'affaires to Japan, then Ambassador to Italy, and then Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Thailand. Biography Britton was born in York, Ontario, in 1903 and was educated at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario where he played both football and ice hockey on the school teams. In the early 1930s Britton also played ice hockey in the Ottawa City Hockey League for the Ottawa Shamrocks and the Ottawa Rideaus. During the 1936–1937 season Britton worked as an assistant trade commissioner in Johannesburg, South Africa where he helped organize the South African Ice Hockey Association (SAIHA). He would later work as a diplomat for Canada in Japan, Italy and Thailand. Jim Britton
James Allan Britton (born March 25, 1944) is a retired Major League Baseball pitcher who played from 1967 to 1971 with the Atlanta Braves and Montreal Expos. He was tall and weighed 225 pounds. Career Britton was born in North Tonawanda, New York and attended Tonawanda High School. In 1961, Britton refused a football scholarship to Penn State University and signed as an amateur free agent with the Baltimore Orioles. On November 26, 1962, the Braves drafted him in the first-year draft. On September 20, 1967, at the age of 23, Britton made his Major League debut with the Braves. During this game he gave up a three-run home run to Johnny Bench, the first of Bench's career. Perhaps his best season in the Major Leagues was his second: in 34 games, he had an ERA of 3.10. On December 2, 1969, Britton was traded with Don Johnson, a minor leaguer, to the Montreal Expos for pitcher Larry Jaster.
