SS Connemara
The SS ''Connemara'' was a twin screw steamer, 272 feet long, 35 broad and 14 deep with a gross register tonnage of 1106. She sank on the night of 3 November 1916 at the entrance to Carlingford Lough, Louth, Ireland after being hit amidships by the coalship ''Retriever''. 97 people died that night and the only survivor was James Boyle – a fireman on the ''Retriever'' and former caretaker of Warrenpoint Town Hall and a non-swimmer. The captain on the ''Connemara'' was Captain G. H. Doeg. The captain on the ''Retriever'' was Patrick O'Neill. Both men were experienced seamen and the accident was attributed to the atrocious weather conditions on the night. Jimmy Boyle (artist)
James Boyle (born 17 May 1944) is a Scottish former gangster and convicted murderer who became a sculptor and novelist after his release from prison. Biography In 1967, Boyle was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of another gangland figure, William "Babs" Rooney. He served fourteen years before his release in 1980. Boyle has always denied killing Rooney but has acknowledged having been a violent and sometimes ruthless moneylender from the Gorbals, one of the roughest and most deprived areas of Glasgow. During his incarceration in the special unit of Barlinnie Prison, he turned to art, with the help of the special unit's art therapist, Joyce Laing. He wrote an autobiography, '' A Sense of Freedom'' (1977), which was later turned into a film of the same name. In 1979, whilst still a prisoner at Barlinnie, he was commissioned to produce a memorial statue of poet William McGonagall. James Boyle (born 29 March 1946) was Chairman of the National Library of Scotland until 2016, Chairman of the British Council in Scotland and was formerly Chairman of the Scottish Arts Council, Chairman of the Scottish Government's Cultural Commission, Controller of BBC Radio 4, Head of BBC Radio Scotland and co-founder of the UNESCO World City of Literature and World City of Music Programs. Jim Boyle (June 9, 1942 – December 23, 2005) was an American former college basketball player and coach. He coached at Saint Joseph's from 1981 to 1990. Early life and playing career Boyle grew up in Philadelphia. He attended West Catholic Preparatory High School, where his teammates included Jim Lynam and Herb Magee. As a senior in 1959, he helped lead the team to the city title. Boyle played college basketball at Saint Joseph's under Jack Ramsay. He led the team in rebounding as a junior, and was named a captain as a senior, averaging 11.6 points per game. Boyle graduated from Saint Joseph's in 1964. James Boyle (Irish Parliamentary Party Politician)
James Boyle (1863 – 1 December 1936) was a solicitor and Irish Nationalist politician from Stranorlar in County Donegal, who served briefly in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, United Kingdom House of Commons as a member of the Irish Parliamentary Party at the start of the 20th century. Boyle was a delegate to the Irish Race Convention held in Dublin in September 1896, and at the 1900 United Kingdom general election, general election in October 1900 he was elected unopposed as Member of Parliament for West Donegal (UK Parliament constituency), West Donegal. He told the Irish Party's leader John Redmond in March 1902 of his intention to resign his seat, and he formally resigned from the Commons on 10 April. A coroner before his election to Parliament, he was listed in the 1901 edition of Who's Who as being over 200 years old (and therefore having lived in for centuries).
