James Bluemel
James Bluemel is a television documentary filmmaker. Career The first programme he directed was the three-part documentary ''The Romanians are Coming'', screened on Channel 4 between 17 February and 3 March 2015. Bluemel visited Baia Mare, a town in north Romania and was shocked to see the living conditions of the Roma community there. The documentary focuses on Sandhu, a member of this community, who decides to come to the United Kingdom. The documentary also follows Mihaila a middle-aged nurse, who comes from more comfortable circumstances in Constantia on the Black Sea coast. Other people featured are Stefan, who works as a human statue whilst raising money for his daughter's operation and Adi, who sleeps rough so he can send more money back to his wife in Romania. The Rose d'Or ('Golden Rose') is an international awards festival in entertainment broadcasting and programming. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) first acquired the Rose d’Or in 1961, when it was created by Swiss Television in the lakeside city of Montreux. The awards stayed with the EBU for almost 40 years. The EBU re-acquired the awards in 2013 and successfully re-launched the event that year in Brussels, then relocated to Berlin from 2014 to 2018. In 2014 the event took place on 17 September in Berlin, Germany. For the first time in its 53-year history, the competition categories were extended to include radio and online video programmes in addition to the traditional focus on television. Hassan Akkad () is a British writer, filmmaker and human rights activist originally from Syria. Life Syria He is originally from Damascus, and worked as an English teacher and photographer. In 2011, as protests in Syria against the government of Bashar al-Assad grew, he joined in and filmed the demonstrations. In response to his taking part, the authorities arrested and beat him twice. After his first period of incarceration, al-Assad invited him to have a conversation, where Akkad told him "about the systemic torture of his ssad'sregime". Moving to the UK In September 2015, he fled Syria and arrived in the UK, a journey which took 87 days. He travelled via Turkey and the Calais Jungle, before using a fake passport to fly to Heathrow, where he claimed asylum.
