''James Baines'' was a passenger clipper ship completely constructed of timber in the 1850s and launched on 25 July 1854 from the East Boston shipyard of the famous ship builder Donald McKay in the United States for the Black Ball Line of James Baines & Co., Liverpool. The clipper was one of the few known larger sailing ships rigged with a moonsail. General description Ship builder Donald McKay laid all his skills and professional experience in the construction of this passenger carrying clipper ship, small faults that had been detected by him before in the sister ships were fixed during the building of ''James Baines''. USS ''Algol'' (AKA-54) was an . She was the first ship of the United States Navy by this name, after Algol, a fixed star in the constellation Perseus. ''Algol'' served as a commissioned ship for 22 years and 1 month. She was laid down on 10 December 1942, as ''James Barnes'', a Maritime Commission Type C2-S-B1 hull, under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 1153), at Moore Dry Dock Company, in Oakland, California. She was launched on 17 February 1943, renamed ''Algol'' on 30 August 1943, and placed in reduced commission on 27 November 1943 for transit to Willamette Shipyard, Portland, Oregon, for completion as an attack cargo ship. She was decommissioned at Portland on 3 December 1943, and recommissioned USS ''Algol'' (AKA-54), on 21 July 1944 at Willamette Shipyard. James Baines (merchant)
James Baines (1822 – 8 March 1889) was a British merchant, shipowner and shipbroker by trade. He became famous as the founder of James Baines & Co. that ran a fleet of 86 ships on the Liverpool Black Ball line between England and Australia in 1851–1871. Early life He was born in Upper Duke Street, Liverpool, the son of William Baines and Mary Picton. He married Anne Netherton in 1848 and had two daughters. After her husband died in 1829, his mother ran a very successful confectionery manufacturing business which provided a wedding cake for the Royal Family. This may have been the source of some of the funds Baines used to set up his shipping business in 1851. James Baine
James Baine (1710–1790) was one of the ministers of the secession from the Church of Scotland which took the name of the Relief Church. Life Baine was the son of the parish minister of Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, and born in the manse there in 1710. His elementary education was received at the parish school. He afterwards proceeded to the university of Glasgow. He had a brilliant career there and graduated M.A. Having been licensed as a preacher of the gospel, he was presented by the Duke of Montrose to the church of Killearn, the parish adjoining his father's. In 1756 he was translated to the high church of Paisley, and in 1757 had the celebrated Dr. John Witherspoon for a colleague. Baine supported evangelical doctrine, as opposed to what came to be known as moderatism. In 1745 he was promoting revival in the west of Scotland. James Baynes
James Baynes (5 April 1766 – 12 May 1837) was an English watercolour painter and drawing-master. Little is known of his family apart from the fact that he was born in Lancaster as the son of a local tradesman and was the eldest of six children, his grandfather being a Catholic priest in Kirkby Lonsdale where his father was born. As a boy he showed a love of the arts and had been employed to draw heads and work devices until Dr. Campbell, a local Physician, having seen some of these works sent some sketches to his friend George Romney. The young Baynes was then sent to London to study under Romney at the expense of Dr. Campbell. In 1784, at the age of 18 he became a student at the Royal Academy. He wedded Mary Mann (1766–1845) in 1785 at Marylebone Church, London. Their son, Thomas Mann Baynes (1794–1854), was also a noted watercolour artist.
