James Aylward (politician)
James Aylward (born January 12, 1964) is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island in the 2011 provincial election. He represents the district of Stratford-Keppoch as a member of the Prince Edward Island Progressive Conservative Party. He served as the Leader of the Opposition and leader of the Progressive Conservative party from October 2017 to February 2019. In December 2014, Aylward announced his candidacy in the 2015 Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island leadership election. He lost to Rob Lantz on the second ballot, at the PC leadership convention on February 28, 2015. ''The Guardian'' is a daily newspaper published six days a week in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The paper was originally launched in the 1870s as ''The Presbyterian and Evangelical Protestant Union'', owned by Presbyterian minister Stephen G. Lawson. It adopted its current name in 1887. After a succession of local owners, the newspaper was bought by Thomson Corporation in the 1950s. Southam Newspapers acquired the paper from Thomson in 1996, before being itself acquired by Canwest Global Communications in 2000. Rob Lantz
Rob Lantz is a Canadian politician. He was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island for seven months in 2015, having been elected during the party's leadership election on February 28, 2015. From 2006 to 2014, Lantz was a member of the Charlottetown City Council. Lantz led the party in the 2015 provincial election, but fell 24 votes short in his attempt to win his own seat representing the riding of Charlottetown-Brighton in the provincial legislature. The margin was reduced to 22 votes after a recount. Lantz resigned as PC leader on September 23, 2015. The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island selected a new leader on February 28, 2015, to replace Olive Crane who resigned on January 31, 2013. The Progressive Conservatives have been the Official Opposition in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island since June 12, 2007, having lost the 2007 and 2011 provincial elections to the Liberals. The interim leader was Steven Myers. The party used a preferential ballot for its leadership convention for the first time. Voting also occurred at satellite voting sites in Bloomfield, Summerside, Souris and Montague. The election was won by former Charlottetown City Councillor Rob Lantz on the second ballot. The party executive decided prior to voting not to release vote totals in the interests of party unity; however it was later reported that Compton was eliminated after the first ballot and that Lantz then narrowly defeated Aylward on the second ballot. 2011 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 2011 Prince Edward Island general election was held on October 3, 2011. The Liberal government of Premier Robert Ghiz was elected to a second majority government, winning one seat less than they did in 2007. Ghiz himself considered 18 seats to be a marker for a strong majority. He won 22. Health care was an important issue during the election, especially in rural areas. The Progressive Conservatives retained their position as Official Opposition, winning five seats. Olive Crane used the issue of the Provincial Nominee Program during the election, as well as issues surrounding immigration and investments that came under investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Federal Minister Jason Kenney during the election.
