Jamaica Division Of North America And West Indies Station
The Jamaica Division of the North America and West Indies Station was a sub-command of the British Royal Navy's North America and West Indies Station head-quartered at Port Royal dockyard in Jamaica from 1838 to 1905. History In 1830 The Jamaica Station merged with the North American Station to form the North America and West Indies Station. In 1838 the Royal Navy established a sub-command to the Commander-in-Chief, North America and West Indies Station. It was commanded by the Commodore on Jamaica Division of North America and West Indies Station who was responsible for the naval base until March 1905 when the dockyard was closed. In 1951, the Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda closed after which the new post of Senior Naval Officer, West Indies (SNOWI) was established as the West Indies Sub-Area Command under the Commander-in-Chief, Home Fleet. Peter John Douglas
Vice-Admiral Peter John Douglas (30 June 1787 – 17 December 1858) was an officer of the Royal Navy who served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He was born at Portsmouth on 30 June 1787, the son of Admiral Billy Douglas. He entered the Navy on 17 January 1797 and during the next six years served on a variety of ships, including the 90-gun , commanded by his father. In March 1804, he was appointed Acting-Lieutenant of the sloop for his conduct in proceeding up the river Elbe with the boats of that sloop, and capturing five vessels which had forced the blockade. Admiral Sir Augustus Phillimore (24 May 1822 – 25 November 1897) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth. He is credited with first proposing the creation of a modern naval dockyard in Gibraltar. Early life Phillimore was born on 24 May 1822 at Whitehall in Westminster, London the son of Joseph Phillimore later a professor of civil law at Oxford and his wife Elizabeth. He was educated at Westminster before joining the Royal Navy College at Portsmouth. Naval career Phillimore joined the Royal Navy in 1835. He served in the Carlist Wars and in the First Opium War. Francis McClintock
Sir Francis Leopold McClintock (8 July 1819 – 17 November 1907) was an Irish explorer in the British Royal Navy, known for his discoveries in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. He confirmed explorer John Rae's controversial report gathered from Inuit sources on the fate of Franklin's lost expedition, the ill-fated Royal Navy undertaking commanded by Sir John Franklin in 1845 attempting to be the first to traverse the Northwest Passage. McClintock's report was received more favorably than that of Rae, who was shunned and denied recognition for having discovered the lost expedition's fate. Rae's report ultimately guided McClintock to the correct area to conduct a search. McClintock also stirred controversy with his claim that Franklin, before his death, had essentially discovered the Northwest Passage, while in reality he had not. Algernon Frederick Rous De Horsey
Admiral Sir Algernon Frederick Rous de Horsey (25 July 1827 – 22 October 1922) was a Royal Navy officer, appointed aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria. He distinguished himself in Canada during the Fenian raids, and was thanked in Parliament for suppressing riots in Jamaica. Early life De Horsey was the son of Spencer de Horsey, of Great Glemham Suffolk, and Lady Louise, a daughter of the first Earl of Stradbroke. His only sister was the Countess of Cardigan, whose reminiscences caused a scandal when they were published. Naval career De Horsey joined the Royal Navy in 1840 and served on the coast of Syria later that year. He received the Naval General Service Medal and bar for his service in Syria as well as a medal for his service in Acre given by the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Henry Kellett
Vice Admiral Sir Henry Kellett, (2 November 1806 – 1 March 1875) was a British naval officer and explorer. Career Born at Clonacody in Tipperary County, Ireland, on 2 November 1806, Kellett joined the Royal Navy in 1822. He spent three years in the West Indies and then served on survey vessels under William Fitzwilliam Owen in Africa, as second-in-command of under Edward Belcher in the East Indies, and as captain of in the First Opium War with China during which he was promoted to commander in 1841 and post-captain in 1842. In 1845 Kellett was appointed captain of the survey ship as part of a hydrography survey mission, the primary objective of which was to survey the coast of the Americas from Guayaquil to Vancouver, including the Galápagos Islands. Daniel Pring
Daniel Pring ( 1788 – 29 November 1846) was an officer in the British Royal Navy. He is best known for the part he played in the War of 1812 between Britain and the United States. He was born near Honiton in Devon. He entered the Navy in 1800, and evidently took part in the abortive British invasions of the Río de la Plata, as in 1807 he was appointed Lieutenant and commander of the schooner , taken as a prize at Montevideo. His promotion to Lieutenant was confirmed in 1808. In 1810, he married Sarah Anne Wemyss from Dundee. In 1811, he was serving aboard HMS ''Africa'', the flagship of Vice Admiral Sir Herbert Sawyer, the commander in chief of the North American station based at Halifax, Nova Scotia.
