Jamacha (pronounced: ) is a neighborhood in the southeastern area of San Diego, California. It is generally bounded by the city of Lemon Grove to the north, unincorporated La Presa to the east, Imperial Avenue and Encanto to the west, and Skyline and Lomita Village to the south. Major thoroughfares include Lisbon Street, Jamacha Road, and Woodrow Avenue. The neighborhood is part of the Skyline-Paradise Hills Community Planning Area. History Jamacha is named for the Jamacha Valley and Rancho Jamacha, a Mexican land grant estate. The name was variously spelled ''Xamacha'', ''Jamacha', 'Jamacho'', and ''Gamacha'' until ''Jamacha'' was fixed as the official spelling in the early 20th century. Lemon Grove, California
Lemon Grove is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 27,627 at the 2020 census, up from 25,320 at the 2010 census. History The area that eventually became Lemon Grove was part of Mission San Diego de Alcalá, one of the Spanish missions in California. After Mexico became independent from Spain, the Californios (residents of Alta California) ranched on various land grants. The area that now includes Lemon Grove was granted to Santiago Argüello, who received more than 59,000 acres.Helen M. It is an outlying neighborhood adjacent to the independent city of National City and the unincorporated communities of Lincoln Acres and certain portions of Bonita. Rancho Jamacha
Rancho Jamacha was a Mexican land grant in present-day San Diego County, California given in 1840 by Governor Juan Alvarado to Apolinaria Lorenzana. Jamacha is an Indian name. The grant extended eastward from Rancho de la Nación along the Sweetwater River Valley. The southwestern section of the rancho is now covered by the waters of the Sweetwater Reservoir created in 1888. History Apolinaria Lorenzana (1790–1884) came to California with her mother in 1800. When her mother returned to Mexico, Apolinaria moved to San Diego, under the care of Raymundo Carrillo. Apolinaria Lorenzana remained a single woman devoted to the church. As a result of her religious devotion, she was called "La Beata", meaning "the pious one". In 1840, Lorenzana received a two square league grant of some of the San Diego Mission's grazing land. Skyline, also known as Skyline Hills or Skyline Park, is a hilly urban neighborhood in Southeastern San Diego. Southeast San Diego
Southeast San Diego refers to the southeastern portion of the City of San Diego (excluding South San Diego) and the neighborhoods south of State Route 94 ( Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway) and east of Downtown San Diego. There are three official community planning areas: Skyline-Paradise Hills, Encanto Neighborhoods, and Southeastern. Largely urbanized in the areas nearer Downtown San Diego to the west and characteristically hilly, with lower-density residential and semi-rural neighborhoods toward the east, it is economically and ethnically diverse. In 1992, Councilman George Stevens campaigned against any official usage of the name "Southeast San Diego," since the designation had long been viewed as shorthand for the community as being crime-ridden and impoverished.
