Finntroll
Finntroll is a Finnish metal band from Helsinki that combines elements of black metal and folk metal. Finntroll's lyrics are mostly in Swedish, the only exception being the song "Madon Laulu" on ''Visor om slutet''. Finntroll's original singer, Katla, decided to use Swedish over Finnish since he was part of a Swedish-speaking minority in Finland and the sound of the language seemed to better suit the band's "trollish" outfit. Despite several vocalist changes, this tradition has continued. According to band members Vreth and Skrymer, they took their name from an old Finnish legend where Swedish priests coming to Finland had an encounter with a wild-looking man who killed most of their party. The survivors came back bearing the tale of the Finn-Troll. Finntroll's lyrics mainly deal with legends and tales revolving around the fictional troll-king "Rivfader" and the trolls fighting against the Christians who entered their lands and spread their beliefs. Jan Jämsen
Jan Jämsen, better known as Katla, is a Finnish songwriter, former singer, and co-founder and singer in the folk metal band Finntroll. Finntroll In 1997, Katla and Somnium (the future guitarist of Finntroll) founded a band. Later they recruited four more members to form the first Finntroll line-up. In 1998, they recorded the demo ''Rivfader'' and in 1999 their debut album. In 2001, Finntroll recorded their second album, ''Jaktens Tid''. Before they went in to record their third album, guitarist and co-founder Somnium died by falling from a bridge, but they continued and recorded ''Visor om Slutet''. A joik or yoik (anglicised, where the latter spelling in English conforms with the pronunciation; also named , , , or in the Sámi languages) is a traditional form of song in Sámi music performed by the Sámi people of Sapmi in Northern Europe. Henri Sorvali
Henri "Trollhorn" Sorvali, born 19 October 1978 in Finland, is the guitarist and keyboardist of the pagan metal band Moonsorrow, and keyboardist for Finntroll. He also played keyboards on a few occasional gigs with The Rasmus in the late 1990s. Besides he was the leader of the folk/ambient project Lunar Womb, which in the end in 1999 was a solo project. He has also played in bands called Thunderdogs and Lakupaavi (a side project done as a joke by members of Moonsorrow), and played as a session musician on Ensiferum's self-titled debut album and Glittertind's mini-album Til Dovre Faller. He currently works as a music producer for Rovio Entertainment. Teemu Raimoranta
Teemu (Somnium) Raimoranta (19 May 1977 – 16 March 2003) was a Finnish metal musician. He was the founding guitarist of Finnish folk metal band Finntroll along with vocalist Jan "Katla" Jämsen. He was active in Finntroll as a guitarist until his death in 2003. He also played in Thy Serpent, Barathrum, and Impaled Nazarene. Raimoranta died on 16 March 2003 after falling from the Kaisaniemi bridge in Helsinki while intoxicated. His death occurred shortly after his involvement in Finntroll's completion of ''Visor Om Slutet'', which was dedicated to his memory. Samuli "Skrymer" Ponsimaa is the guitarist in Folk Metal band Finntroll. Hedningarna (''The Heathens'') is a Swedish, and for some years partly Finnish, folk music band that mixes electronics and rock with elements from old Scandinavian folk music. Their music features yoik or juoiggus, a traditional Sami form of song. History Hållbus Totte Mattson, Anders Stake and Björn Tollin formed Hedningarna in 1987.
