Jakob Grünenwald
Jakob Grünenwald (30 September 1821, Bünzwangen — 26 September 1896, Stuttgart) was a German genre painter and illustrator. Life Grünenwald was the eighth child of a family who worked a small farm. In 1840, he began his studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, where he studied history painting under Bernhard von Neher, who steered him towards religious themes. In 1853, he moved to Munich, where he worked with Anton Braith, Albert Kappis and Carl Spitzweg, among others. Grünenwald received numerous public contracts and, until 1881, participated in many exhibitions in Dresden, Berlin and the Munich Glaspalast. He created most of his best-known works in Munich and concentrated on genre painting. As interest in his work began to wane, he received an appointment to the Stuttgart Academy, through the mediation of his former teacher, Neher. Karl Bauer
Karl Konrad Friedrich Bauer (1868–1942) was a German artist, print-maker and poet. Bauer's traditional skills in draftsmanship made him a popular illustrator and portrait artist in the early 20th century. In his later life he made a number of portraits of Nazi leaders. His poetry was admired and promoted by Stefan George. Life Born on 7 July 1868, Bauer spent his childhood and youth in Stuttgart. Hyacinth Holland
Hyacinth Holland (16 August 1827 – 16 January 1918) was a German art and literature historian. Life Born in Munich, Holland was a son of the lawyer Christoph Holland and his wife Karoline Seel. In 1846 he passed the Abitur at the Wilhelmsgymnasium München. At the Universität of his hometown, Holland began to study Catholic theology, but later switched to law and medicine. He successfully completed his studies in art and literary history in 1853 at the University of Würzburg with a doctorate. In 1853, Holland also made his successful debut as a writer; he published the first volume of a ''History of German Literature'' (planned for three volumes, this work remained a fragment). Throughout his life, he earned his living as a freelance contributor to various newspapers and magazines. Landesmuseum Württemberg
The Landesmuseum Württemberg (Württemberg State Museum) is the main historical museum of the Württemberg part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It emerged from the 16th-century “Kunstkammer” ( Cabinet of art and curiosities) of the dukes, later kings, of Württemberg who resided in Stuttgart. As a museum it was founded in 1862 by King William I. Collections in Stuttgart and Waldenbuch The museum's main location is the Old Castle in Stuttgart. Göppingen ( Swabian: ''Geppenge'' or ''Gebbenga'') is a town in southern Germany, part of the Stuttgart Region of Baden-Württemberg. It is the capital of the district Göppingen. Steel Engraving
Steel engraving is a technique for printing illustrations based on steel instead of copper. It has been rarely used in artistic printmaking, although it was much used for reproductions in the 19th century. Steel engraving was introduced in 1792 by Jacob Perkins (1766–1849), an American inventor, for banknote printing. When Perkins moved to London in 1818, the technique was adapted in 1820 by Charles Warren and especially by Charles Heath (1785–1848) for Thomas Campbell's ''Pleasures of Hope'', which contained the first published plates engraved on steel. The new technique only partially replaced the other commercial techniques of that time such as wood engraving, copper engraving and later lithography. Hermann Pleuer (5 April 1863, in Schwäbisch Gmünd – 6 January 1911, in Stuttgart) was a German Impressionist and landscape artist who is best known for his paintings of the Royal Württemberg State Railways. Biography He was the son of a goldsmith and jeweler.
