Jake Howe
Jake (The Snake) Howe (born 4 June 1991) is an Australian wheelchair rugby player. On 10 March 2012, Howe was wrestling with his best friend on the Barrack Street Jetty during a 21st birthday party river cruise. He landed on his head and this broke a bone in neck and crushed his spinal cord, paralysing him from the armpits down. At the time his girlfriend was pregnant and he now has a son Lucas. Australia National Wheelchair Rugby Team
Wheelchair rugby is a sport with national representation at the Paralympic games. The Australian Team is known as the 'Steelers'. Australia has competed at every Paralympics Games since the sport gained full Paralympic Medal status at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. The Steelers also competed in the 1996 Summer Paralympics where wheelchair rugby was a demonstration sport. The 'Steelers' defeated Canada at the 2012 London Games to win its first gold medal. In 2014, it won its first World Championship by defeating Canada. In winning the world championship, the Steelers became the second nation in history to hold both the Paralympic and world championship titles concurrently. Wheelchair Rugby At The 2020 Summer Paralympics
The Wheelchair rugby tournament at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan was the seventh edition of Wheelchair rugby as a Paralympic sport since its debut as a demonstration sport at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta. The competition was hosted at the Yoyogi National Stadium and was held from 25 to 29 August 2021. Eight teams competed in the competition which included the debutant of Denmark at the Paralympics. The eight teams were separated into two groups of four with the top two teams from each group qualifying through to the semi-finals while the bottom two played off in the fifth and seventh place match respectively. The remaining four teams then played-off in two semi-finals with the winners going through to the gold medal play-off while the losers met in the bronze-medal match. 2022 IWRF World Championship
The 2022 Wheelchair Rugby World Championship was the 8th international championship for wheelchair rugby. It was held at the DGI-Huset recreational centre in Vejle, Denmark from 10–16 October 2022 and contested by the world's top twelve national teams. The tournament was won by Australia, defeating United States in the final by 58–55 to claim their second title. Tournament Twelve teams contested the 2022 Wheelchair Rugby World Championship. Wheelchair rugby (originally murderball, and known as quad rugby in the United States) is a team sport for athletes with a disability. It is practised in over twenty-five countries around the world and is a summer Paralympic sport. The US name is based on the requirement that all wheelchair rugby players need to have disabilities that include at least some loss of function in at least three limbs. Although most have spinal cord injuries, players may also qualify through multiple amputations, neurological disorders or other medical conditions. Players are assigned a functional level in points, and each team is limited to fielding a team with a total of eight points. Wheelchair rugby is played indoors on a hardwood court, and physical contact between wheelchairs is an integral part of the game. The 2018 IWRF World Championship was the 7th international championship for wheelchair rugby. It was held in Sydney, Australia at the Quaycentre and Genea Netball Centre in Sydney Olympic Park from August 5 to August 10. The tournament was won by Japan, their first title.
