Jacques Tétreault
Jacques Tétreault (8 April 1929 – 20 August 2018) was a Canadian politician and lawyer who was a member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1988 to 1993. His background was in law. He was elected in the 1988 Canadian federal election, 1988 federal election at the Laval Centre, Laval-des-Rapides electoral district for the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, Progressive Conservative party. He served in the 34th Canadian Parliament but did not seek another term in Parliament in the 1993 Canadian federal election, 1993 federal election. Tétrault had also previously served as mayor of Laval, Quebec, Laval between 1965 and 1973. He also was a leadership candidate for the Union Nationale (Quebec), Union Nationale in May 1976, but was defeated by Rodrigue Biron. A street near the Montmorency (Montreal Metro), Montmorency metro station in Laval is named after him. Laval (; ) is a city in Quebec, Canada. It is in the southwest of the province, north of Montreal. It is the largest suburb of Montreal, the third-largest city in the province after Montreal and Quebec City, and the thirteenth largest city in Canada with a population of 422,993 in 2016. Laval is geographically separated from the mainland to the north by the Rivière des Mille Îles, and from the Island of Montreal to the south by the Rivière des Prairies. Laval occupies all of Île Jésus as well as the Îles Laval. The 1993 Canadian federal election was held on October 25, 1993, to elect members to the House of Commons of the 35th Parliament of Canada. Considered to be a major political realignment, it was one of the most eventful elections in Canada's history. Two new regionalist parties emerged and the election marked the worst defeat for a governing party at the federal level. In a landslide, the Liberal Party, led by Jean Chrétien, won a majority government. The election was called on September 8, 1993, by the new Progressive Conservative Party (PC) leader, Prime Minister Kim Campbell, near the end of her party's five-year mandate.
