Jacob Horwitz
Jacob Horwitz (or Horowitz) (1830 – 24 March 1920) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Horwitz was born in 1830 in East Prussia (now part of Poland). Together with his brother, he ran the Exchange Store general store in the town of Warwick, and owned the local Ellenthorpe Flour Mill. Politics Horwitz began public life as Mayor of Warwick from 1876 to 1878. He resigned in 1878 to successfully contest the seat of Warwick in the Queensland Legislative Assembly. A member of the Liberal party, Horwitz was elected to the seat in 1878, defeating James Morgan who was dying from an injury sustained some months earlier. Horwitz served two terms as member for the district from 1878 to 1887. In February 1887, he embarked on a trip to Europe. Warwick was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1860 to 2001. It centred on the town of Warwick. The electorate was represented by two Premiers: Arthur Morgan and Thomas Joseph Byrnes. It was also the seat of former Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg. Darling Downs
The Darling Downs is a farming region on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in southern Queensland, Australia. The Downs are to the west of South East Queensland and are one of the major regions of Queensland. The name was generally applied to an area approximating to that of the Condamine River catchment upstream of Condamine township but is now applied to a wider region comprising the Southern Downs, Western Downs, Toowoomba and Goondiwindi local authority areas. The name Darling Downs was given in 1827 by Allan Cunningham, the first European explorer to reach the area and recognises the then Governor of New South Wales, Ralph Darling. The region has developed a strong and diverse agricultural industry largely due to the extensive areas of vertosols (cracking clay soils), particularly black vertosols, of moderate to high fertility and available water capacity. James Morgan (Queensland Politician)
James Morgan (1816-1878) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life James Morgan was born on 29 September 1816 in Longford, Ireland to Michael, a local farmer. He attended the private school of author Maria Edgeworth in Edgeworthtown. He was a member of the Church of England. At 19 years of age, he became interested in surveying and spent 3 years attached to a party of surveyors around Snowdon in Caernarvonshire, Wales. In late 1840, he immigrated on the ''Palestine,'' arriving in Sydney on 14 March 1841. He spent a few years in the Brisbane Water district in New South Wales before managing the property of W. C. Wentworth on the Namoi River until the end of 1847. In early 1848 he married. He continued to manage pastoral properties until 1868.
